Support of AVCHD in Windows 7

Windows 7 will be available next month on Oct 22nd. AVCHD/mp4/mov formats will be supported if your version is Home Premium, Professional, Enterprise or Ultimate. By default, Windows Live Movie maker is not installed. Once you have any version above, download Windows Live Movie Maker from Microsoft and you will be able to go. I have Windows 7 Professional and find AVCHD can be played very smoothly in Media Player 11, no stuttering/choking. At the same time, I notice that the resolution may be downgraded, I am posting the captured screen and you make the judgement. My computer is 13" Macbook with Intel GMA X3100 video card with 144MB shared memory. I do not know if the video playing is purposely downgraded due to lack of memory. The two pictures are from the same video (Canon demo video) played by Quicktime Pro and Windows Media Player 11. Please notice the edge difference of capital "C" in Canon.

Windows 7 is available since August 22. Yes, it plays AVCHD. Explorer shows thumbnails. Resolution degradation is likely caused by deinterlacing that cannot be controlled, so CoreAVC decoder still has an upper hand.

yeah, back in beta i "sent feedback" to microsoft that they rock for native avchd support in explorer and media player.

Cranky: But this video was shot in 24f with Canon camcorder and never transcoded to 60i.
The still from WMP is darker, different gamma? The red "Canon" letters look horrible, but if you look you can see that the original image has these darker pixels too, though they are much less darker. I know that WMP uses gamma different from other players when it plays WMV files, and Microsoft says that it is a correct gamma. I tend to believe them, when I export to WMV from Vegas, video plays in WMP exactly as I see it in Vegas.

In any case, I would not use WMP as a high-quality monitor, this is just a player.

I have just deleted Windows 7

I agree, I just thought it was very convenient to play AVCHD by clicking the file. In the case of MAcintosh and Final Cut Pro 6, I have to export to FCP first, then I either transcode it or play it in FCP, don't like this hassle.
Anyone else here already have Windows 7 and willing to share your experience?

it works wonderfully for simply playing back MTS files. The panasonic avccam viewer chokes on mts files while wmp works great for reviewing raw footage (and for watching rendered files)

Yeah, I'm dual-booting Windows 7 on my laptop because it loads really fast and plays AVCHD for me. Only problem is I can't get the right audio drivers for the speakers to work on my laptop (I have to use the headphone jack), but I can't rightly complain since Dell doesn't provide Windows 7 drivers for my laptop. I'm sure I could fix it by twiddling, but that's an entirely different issue. Long story short: I love it. :)
