Supplied Software

Again I am new D90 owner. Is it necessary that I use the software that comes with the camera? I am content with using iPhoto on my Mac for my photos. I don't want to install the Nikon software and have that override iPhoto.

I am guessing I will have to update the firmware in the camera at some point though...

any thoughts?

you need the supplied software to manage picture profiles and curves, it's also nice for batch converting raw stills to jpeg or tiff using said profiles, and it's more flexible for import than iphoto too. it's not necessary though, not at all. you don't need it for firmware updates either, those are just copied to your memory cards using a card reader (the camera doesn't work as one unfortunately).

however, there's nothing stopping you from having a million different pieces of software installed, nothing "overrides" anything so just pick whatever tool is best for that situation. i use nikon transfer for video since you can set the destination folder, as well as stills that i need to convert from raw to jpeg, but iphoto for most stills, certainly vacation type stuff that i already shot in jpeg.
