Super Slow Motion

Is it possible to shoot Super Slow Motion on the dvx100b or any video camera on the market? Or is film the only option? When I mean super slow motion, I mean like Rocky and kung fu movies slow motion. So slow you see the blood spray slow.

You guys know any cameras on the market that can do this?

I have the dvx100b, and I've read articles saying to shoot 60i and 120 shutter speed. Then edit on a 24p timeline, at 40%. Or 30p timeline at 50%. Editing on 30p is better right? If it's going to be on a dvd/tv?

Well, the HVX does in camera variable frame rates in camera (fast and slow motion) up to 60fps, which is 2.5x slow motion @24p.

For the DVX, your option would be to shoot 60i, and then slow it down in post.

You can edit 24p or 30p... whatever your preference. You just add the 3:2 pulldown on export to your final format to make it conform to the 60i broadcast codec.

Same way movies are done for dvd's, for t.v. release, etc. Same way a lot of shows on t.v. are shot 24p. and same way many national commericals are shot in 24p.

If you like 24p, shoot it. If you like 30p, shoot it....

The short answer, with the DVX, you slow down in post production with your NLE, or 3rd party program.

Other options are a film camera, or expensive specialty camera like the Phantom. Or the Red one, when released... Final frame rate specs haven't been released on that, but it is spec'd for 120fps in 720p right now. But, they've been talking about axing that and doing 96fps in 2k lately...

So would you guys say the best camera for slow motion in an affordable price range is the HVX? Or are all cameras such as DVX, XHA1, Z1AU, going to produce similar results?

If you want it done in camera get HVX if u want to do it in post get all the ones that were mentioned and do it in post. Those are your options.

The HVX is the only camera in this price range that does variable framerates. The next camera up in price range that does it is the HPX500 (around 20k with lens, etc.)

Otherwise, just pick the camera of your choice and do it the good old fashioned way... in post.

actually the JVC HD250 does 60P also. but you have to slow it down in post, and its probably quite compressed looking. though ive never seen it myslef.

I was reading articles about the SONY HDR HC3 That is an awesome camera, soo cheap!!! 1080i! Even has night vision!!!! I wish that was my first handheld...

But I did not read a lot of info on the super slow motion. The article said it shoots 240 fps. That is very very good, but it says it looks fuzzy?
Does anyone have this camera?
Can you shoot instead 120fps? and maybe that will make the quality better?

If you use a Mac for your NLE (and FCS 2), Motion and FCP will do pretty good slow motion that doesn't use frame blending (which is what most NLE's use for slow motion which is why it always looks pretty bad)

To check out a demo, click here:

And check out the "retiming behavior" movie.

What about the HDR HC7. 240fps for super smooth slow mo.

The product disciption boast:

"Increase the frame rate from 60fps to 240fps, capturing smooth slow motion Super SteadyShot(R) compensates for camera shake without compromising picture quality"

Has anyone used this?

Your resolution drops by about 2/3 using that feature. Sure it's 240 frames, but it looks like you got it from a webcam.
