Super Grainy Image

Recently bought a DVX 100b after using a friends and falling in love with the model.

All was well until we were shooting (24p) and the image displayed on the lcd showed horizontal lines of graininess flickering across the screen. Adjusted gain and iris didn't work. It looked unnatural. Tried hooking up to external monitor. Still showed. Also played back shot footage on LCD and external monitor and proved the graininess had been recorded.

Tested different settings and speeds. Same problem.

Thought it might be lighting situation. Tested with another DVX 100b two minutes later. That footage is great.

Do we have a failing CCD?

Is the gain settings set to 0? That is the only way honestly your going to get grain is if you have your gain settings up higher.

Think of it like this, gain equals grain. The higher the gain the more grain your going to see.

By the way, go into settings and see if your low gain isn't set to something like 10 or some high number. Your DVX should only be set at 0 for low.

We tried that, too

We tried that, too

Sadly, even with gain set low on mids and highs, the problem persists.

Here's a link to a YouTube video I uploaded:

Note the atrocious color and flickering lines. The other camera (same model) shot it beautifully.

What the crap is going on with it?

that surely isnt grain....or anything due to gain for that matter. looks like ur camera needs a check up.

Maybe it's heat related....

Maybe it's heat related....

...it takes a bit for the image to get that bad. For the first few minutes of the camera being on, there's no problem. Possibly a heat issue...?

Regardless, thanks for your input (and I did try the head cleaning; no result, unfortunately). I'll get it checked out. I'll update when it's been resolved.

Thanks again!

Never, never, never NEVER use those cleaning tapes. They do more harm then good, if you must use it I would honestly say use it maybe once or twice per year and even then I wouldn't even do that.

PS: Did I forget to say NEVER?
