super 8

having just joined this forum and having a look at the film pages it comes as no surprise to find some still laying on the virtues of super 8,having used video since the early 80s and super 8 i must say compaired to good mini dv let alone hdv camcorders super 8 looks like svhs on a bad day, dont come the only film has the film look the world looks like it is not what it is portrade by super 8 if you dont like this world fair doos, has any feature film available on pal dvd been made on super 8 i think not unlike mini dvs manic 28 days later the king is alive and loads more, dont come up with the cost if films can be made on 16m it cant be the cost option but i am afraid the quality option, yes many of us like to wach our old super 8 films and i have other peoples as well its nice for a change thats all.

Wow, that is one really long run on sentence!

"...super 8 looks like svhs on a bad day..."

I have never seen any footage from VHS or S-VHS that even looks remotely like Super 8. Do you have any examples that would support this statement?

I think Super 8 can be a great look for a lot of narrative projects. Here is a link to a project that used both Super 8 and HDV. Personally, I like the Super 8 footage at the head much more than the HDV footage which follows.

Half of the feature film "Natural Born Killer" by Oliver Stone was shot on Super 8, using my fav. camera the Beaulieu, and it looks nothing like Svhs on a bad day.

I think this dude is pretty confused and he has a lot to say but with not a lot of subtantial proof....
S VHS is.... was a great format for the video maker back in the day.... it allow you to experiment ( on a limited basis) with certain looks but was mostly used... to record certain locations or shoot example... etc etc ( TV home VIDEO or document WORK), and it is today still in use for industrial work.
Now Super 8 is a great format and it was back in the day to record pretty much the same thing...
Now the argument should be stablish this way ,not an attack on a format but instead to what people do with it...., that to the artist shouldn't be a restriction or a censorship
I know plenty of people that shoot in all does formats( still today) and their projects are spectacular not only visual, but to the whole narrative ....
and compared to many many filmmakers projects that I see on these and many other pages their projects are in a different level ( a higher one)

Now let me get this straight this is not an attack to the many many filmmakers that I see in these and other pages.... in contrary.... this is an important lesson that plenty of people NEED to learn...
"is not what you have ,but what you do with it"

Getting that phrase out of the way... I want to address to the author of this thread and the people with his type of his thinking the following comment

Ladies and Gentleman ,who cares what people shoot on digital or film.... isn't the best of our interest to determine if our projects are excellent? isn't that what really matter in this business? not only the visual quality of the project, but actually the quality as a whole?
I feel that the new filmmaker is embracing technology as an esxcuse to not lear or experience the traditinal method or the word of great filmmakers that been on the trenches way long time ago?.... I feel that the "Easy" factor today is destroying in part the ability to determine the most important parts of our careers.... mental concepts like " well I have it I can do it whenever I want ?" but is an "easy thinking" like that that let us go to the "procrastination" grounds or even worse to a point that the filmmaker doesn't go to a more elaborated "though process".

Remember this is not an attack... is just a warning for those that have the gear ( like me.... film and HD) that equipment should be the most important part of our projects( even do it is an important part) but is our Ideas, concepts and stories that is what actually is our base in all our endeavors, from there yes we hit it with all that we have...
but is only from there.....

Best Regards

Hey Martini,

I agree, I will shoot with whatever camera the producer says we are going to use if that is what it takes to book the job. At the same time I, like everyone, have my preferences, and these tend to differ based upon the needs of the script.

With todays film stocks, I am a really big fan of S16 but am also equally interested in looking into new cameras like the Aaton Penelope due to its 2 perf capability. I am equally happy to shoot a project on SD or HD if that is what is called for, but I do like to shoot film if given a choice.

My comment to 'chrishull3' was not an overt attack, I would be very interested to see any examples that would prove his contention. However, to compare Super 8 to S-VHS, just seems uninformed.

Hey man ....
I know yours wasn't an attack.... But I know that mine could off be consider as one....
so I specified....

best

Hey Martini,

I didn't read your post as an attack either, so no problem.

I am rather curious to see if 'chrishull3' can provide links to any footage that supports the original claim. I still have my doubts that we will see any. Believe me if I found a S-VHS camera that produced Super 8 looking footage I would buy it in a heart beat!

hehehehehehehe me to....
the funny thing is that my first camera of moving images was a super VHS.... and the poor thing became a frankestien....my father is a photo technician he fixes all sort of cameras and all sort of formats... I grew up having his lab in my room ... so when I got my first cam.... the poor thing had more surgery that a trasvesty in amsterdam hehehe
it was a pal Panasonic.... and the images that I got out that cam... having my film education... where fenomenal... but after a while that cam died...( to many surgery)
I got curious to but his info got all mix and he didn't any argument what's so ever.... that's why I wrote that ... because I'm tired to see all this people thinking that because the technology is here and is getting better... they are able to shoot what ever they want.... and that's just wrong... you have to go to a process and you'll get there... but you need to give credit to the process... that's all

hehehe Ladies and Gents you know whats wrong today.... I telll you people don't read... you don't read properly...
Chris you are .... I don't want to say it because they will banned me... but listen to this
I said first I'm Happy of teh new technologies ( I have both)... what people are having a blast with you is because They feel you are an ignorant little kid making assumptions.... you talk the tal before walking the walk.... properly.... oooo you shoot your first cartridges of super 8 and tehy didn't comeout good oooo what a sh*t..... New technology is the best yeaaahh!!!!
What about if I tell you that I have money today to give to you to shoot a whole feature on the Panasonic Genesis( the best digital camera out there... I know because I used one this summer)....tell you buffon can you shoot preperly with it?
let me tell you I don't think soo...
My advice is stop right know.... go to a library with both formats and learn what you are talking about... and all this guys in here in the film section know about HD as much as they know about film.... they don't defend anything more of what of what of their speaking to them.... they been in both paths... I been there... I shoot from 8mm to IMAX and from compact VHS to High ernd HD..... I helping you... but it seems taht you feel you are right.... anyways Iwasting my time...
good luck my friend...

Best

calm down my friend if you shoot with imax why are you so angry i have only used the others you mention and only won a dozen amateur cups.i started this talk becouse i am sick of hearing super 8 users sounding off super 8 and knocking video the response tells it all,if people want to use super 8 use it just stop knocking dv and hdv with no justifacation.and i dont need to go the library i have all the books i need. by the way why do they hide these film pages on the dvxuser site does film not have its own.good luck
I agree with you on the bashing... but I think it comes from both ends....
I mean.. if compared the lowest quality of film with the lowest quality of video.... Film kick ass... but if you compares diferent levels yeah... that is unfair... but I understand now where you come from... I don't like people bashing other with jsut fomrats ....
I understand your point

here's some super 8 ... approx 3min of select takes ( not edited) - no audio ...
IMO super 8 still looks very good ...

this is from the captured Dvcam - rendered to WMV 23.976fps 500k stream ...

you will probably get " this page cannot be displayed" you may have to click on the link 2-4 times before it connects to page ( it's a yahoo thing) ...
also you may have to click on the clip 2-4 times ...

I don't think that anyone is arguing that Super 8 is high resolution, rather it may be a good choice for certain projects (like the link that I provided).

Filmmaking is about telling a story, its not about resolution or looking like reality (unless that is what is needed to tell the story). You don't have to "like" the look of super 8 (or any format for that matter) to understand that it might, in the right circumstance, be the best choice for a given project.

This thread is becoming too much about who is right and who is wrong. These are all opinions and neither extreme is "right".

i agree

yes i agree and of course there are certain projects for super 8 to be used,i have loads of the stuff myself .at least we are on the same plane now ,all the best.

Funny thing....I hadn't taken much notice of super 8, until my video and film club had a "retro night" showing super 8, some from the '60s.
I found the footage subjectivly better than the dv footage I had seen, (Even from a pro DVCAM shoot) not so many sharp jaggies, and the tonality was vastly better.
Now thinking of hunting Ebay.
Oh, yes, I also have an HVX 200, but am yet to shoot HD, as I can't yet afford p2 cards or FS100, but will do when funds (And Avid) permit.
