Super 8 to HD transfer Samples

I used my HVX to transfer some Super 8 footage to HD 720p with the help of the great people at Photoplays www.photoplays.ca in Toronto. We did some tests capturing at
24p and at 30p and the 30p actually has less flicker on the and is a more sold image
Here are links to the two samples.

First one is for the 24p transfer:

Second one was for the 30p transfer:

Here are the links to the same to videos up on Vimeo

nice, they both look pretty much the same, but i think the 24p may be a little smoother, but it may just be my logical mind seeing what it wants to see.
we need to find a quick easy cheap way to film out.

Hey Brian, did you use a pull-down of any kind on this footage? The reason I ask is I see ghost frames on each of your mov's. Also, is this footage copied at speed or is it done one frame at a time? I am working on developing a system with my HVX using an animation software and capturing hi-res tiff files from my projector then using cinematools to conform the image sequence to a 24fps timeline.

Douglas, there was no pull-down and it was captured at speed,
I believe photoplays set it up so it was a shutter speed of 60 and the projector was playing back at 20fps and the camera capturing at 30fps for the 30p version and at 18fps on the projector at capturing on the camera at 24 fps for the 24p version.
Not sure if you can tell but the 24p version has a little bit of a pulse on the grain which is not there in the 30p version. Photoplays have told me they have had the best luck capturing at 30fps then at 24fps.
If you are looking at getting super 8 of 16mm transfered they have the best price by far in Toronto.

What kind of equipment besides the HVX and the projector did you use? I'm curious about doing my own Super 8 to HD transfer. Thanks!

Marco
