super 8 look

Hi all,

I am shooting a short in the coming weeks. I am looking to get a rough, colour rich, older film look to my footage but I am shooting with a dvx. any tips on how to best achieve that older look through lenses or fcp tools? My goal would be to achieve a look similar to super 8.

The biggest issue is that the DVX is going to have way more detail/resolution compared to 8mm. If you shot 8mm and transfered to DV, you'd see that it's very low-res, with big clumpy grain.

You can set your DETAIL down and intentionally use some GAIN to create noise. Set the LINE DETAIL to THICK. You basically need to cruddy up your image.

You could also skip the GAIN and just add big splotchy film grain in post, using something like Film Damage.

Best way to get the super 8 look is to shoot on super 8. Its very inexpensive to do so and it will save you lots of time in post- and you will actually get the super8 look!

I've been able to really make a nice super 8 or 16mm (reversal film stock) image with a + 9 dB setting, along with pushing the contrast up. Also with reverse film, the color is less saturated, but you can go either way. Watch NFL playbacks during the week and the reversal 35mm color film (in slo mo) always looks darker, less saturated and almost like it was shot with film stock from the 1970s.

Buffalo '66 used reversal color 35mm film stock. It's a cool look.
