Sunset shoot on the beach

So I just got my dvx100b a few weeks ago. I am so stoked. My focus is going to be primarily independent film making/documentaries, but I have to pay the bills some how. Translation: weddings. I can deal with anything as long as it means I'm using my dvx. I'm on Oahu, and I have a gig lined up for the end of June shooting a wedding on the beach. The shoot will be at 5pm. The first few things that jump out at me are the

1) the light changing drastically during the shoot
2) the wind blowing like mad and big time effecting the camera's audio

I have a few ideas for dealing with these things, but just wanted to hear what everyone else out there thinks, and how you have handled similar situations.

Thanks!

Check out what I was able to capture of sunsets and wind. I didn't keep the sound but this was my 1st test with the DVX and it out performed my expectations. I have been recording sunsets nonstop now that I know that what you see on the flip out LCD and what you see on a burnt DVD are totally different. I'm planning on using a TV connected to my computer for viewing as I edit. The camera did great. I even had to use the ND filters.

The DVD version looks incredible. This looks very compressed compared to the DVD.

Scout it. Hit the location this week and record. Edit then go back another day after you have some clues. Maybe you might have enough time to conduct the wedding and have them facing the sunset? Take some friends to the location and see if the light works on their faces?

If the wind is blowing on the beach, you may get some sand in your camera too. You definitely don't want that...

hmmm. yeah. that would be bad. can't wait to get your book man! i just called about my rebate and they said i was supposed to send in a seperate form for the book. bleh. hopefully i can get that sorted out pretty soon, get the book, and soak up what's in there. thanks man!

I just got my rebate and bought the camera in February. I didn't get the book and Magic Bullet yet?
ND is neutral density and the camera has 2...1/8 and 1/64. They just darken the light if you're shooting in a bright area and the iris is closed to 16.

aaaahhhhhh. gotcha. once again, thanks. all good tips to help me learn. i talked to the panasonic people, and they'll be shipping out the dvx book/mb at the beginning of next week. sweeeeet.

Wow, I left another message with Panasonic yesterday before I knew my rebate was in the mailbox but 3 months to get it? I hope I get the DVD and book especially worried now that yours will be shipped so quickly?!

Also the camera will tell you when you need the ND filters. I would put the iris on manual and start learning to keep your finger on the rolling iris dial. If you have it on auto then when the sun or lights are bright, the camera closes the iris and peoples faces won't be seen.....iris = f stops.
I seem to be keeping it around f-4 to f-7 and both brights and darks are seen.

did you call 866-339-4296? that's the number i called. i thought everything was going to be shipped out at the same time, but she asked if i had sent in the form for the book and the mb software. i told her i didn't have that form in my box (or a rebate form for that matter, had to print it out from the evs website), and she took care of it. try this number if it's not the one you called already. good luck

Yep, I called and this time they told me to send in the form but in March I was told by registering I was all good.
Just read the form and it says send in the form OR register your camera online. I registered online in March.
Hmmmm

hmmm. i think i need to register online as well just to be sure. i don't want to find myself in the same position 3 months down the road. where did you go to register the camera? i registered the extended warrantee (extra purchase) online, but not the camera itself. panasonic.com?

I registered on the Panasonic website and received an email back confirming. I called them twice today and that gal was very nice, told me that it didn't go through the first time so I need to send paper because it was a safety thing on their end.
I would for sure register online.

Have you recorded anything with your DVX yet?
What system are you editing with?

i've been out and done a little. not much though. sooooo much to learn. i'm taking a four day weekend this weekend though so i'll be doing a lot of shooting. i'm doing all my post work in final cut studio. all my non linear editing in the past was in the audio world, so final cut is new to me. a lot of the audio knowledge is helping out in the editing world though. final cut is pretty awesome from the little i know about it.
