its pretty safe at sunset like that when it mostly concealed, but i wouldnt do it at high noon for the life of me. just like i wouldnt look at it with my own eyes.. , anyway thats a ROCKIN! SKY! .. the contrast is sortof off, would be nice if the ground was silhouetted black, or brighter, but as it is its in that grey muck area.. but somtimes theres not much you can do, and the grab is awsome anyway. if you raise the blacks in a levels adjustment, or up the contrast, you should be able to silhoutete the ground out anyway.
From what I've read. The sun was harmful to older camcorders (like VHS). But it does not harm newer ones. I've done many sun shots with my DVX and I havn't had any problems. It's also recommended to get a UV filter for extra protection. This filter also protects anything from touching the master lens on the camera.
I used the uv filter as well, I wouldn't dare shoot the sun anytime past sunrise or before sunset. Just not worth it, I saved up so much to buy this camera.
The camera reccomended I use the nd filter at 1/8th I wonder if it would of been better off.
I also had the dark foreground problem with my test shot. Tried a few settings to balance between the sky and the ground but couldn't find a working mix.
Here's the Sunrise from this morning (1.5mb Quicktime):
