sun shooting

aight so i looked on some topics about shooting in the sun(outdoors) and i know the standard stuff (as i do it), like ND filter, polorizer, iris and shutter control ect...but i want to know how u get consistently exposed shots outdoors with the sun as ur lightsource ( and a reflector). I'm going to shoot a mock commercial for my cousin for a project however it will be viewed by industry people and i really want this to be top notch. So being a new DVX100B user i wanna know what ya'll do. today we went to the location scouting and stuff and the sun was in and out of the clouds, making it THAT MORE difficult from shot to shot. oh i have no light meter or know the first thing abbout using them as yet :)

So an example would be today i started to shoot sumting in the sun...then after the shot the clouds covered the sun. I opened up the iris, put it on a slower shutter and it looked about even to the other shot. but i dont want to just "eyeball" it and assume.

thanks

are you shooting in 30p, 24p or interlaced? you have to set your color levels right also. this is what i have set when i shoot outdoors:
detail level: -1
V Detail Level: -1
Detail Coloring: +2
Chroma Level: 0
Chroma Phase: 0
Color Temperature: -3
Master Pedestal: -2
Auto Iris Level: -1
Gamma: Cinelike D
Knee: Auto
Matrix: Normal
Skin Tone Detail: Off
V Detail Frequency: (Thick when shooting in interlaced) (Medium When shooting in progressive)

Those arent direcly answering your question, but it contributes to a better image. if you will be shooting in shade/sunlight, you may want to add 1 or 2 external ND filters along with the ND filters on your camera set to 1/64, then just crank up the iris (try to stay around F2.8 if you want that professional look, so you can add shallow depth of field!).

any1 else?

another question off topic...how do u guys deal with the underscan lcd of the 100b? As in most of the stuff i shoot will prolly be shown on TV but i do but some will be for view online (to showcase my stuff) how do u strike a balance while shooting. I dont want to be cutting heads thinking i have a shot. Can the ldc be put in overscan mode ?

Yo, hey mate, I generally expose the shot i'm going for and lock the Iris, this way you won't see the camera adjusting the levels up and down. Unfortunately some parts of the shot may have to be blown out unless you expose the background correctly then use fill light for the subject. A typical news style outdoor shoot would be to shoot the subject with the sun behind them. Set exposure for the background, then blast light until your subject is well lit, you'll have a nice outline of light that highlights the edge of your subject which can look quite flattering, and an evenly balanced shot.

yeh i dont use anything in auto mode. so my iris is always locked. but what about shot to shot. so i set exposure...shoot....and the sun goes into a cloud. i shoot another shot with the sun in the cloud (big ass cloud so its gonna take a while)...and try and get the exposure similar to the other shot by guessing. So is there a more technical tried way to keep ur shots consistent. so its not during the shot i mean ... but from shot to shot with changing light quality and colour temp . the guess work suck.

thanks for the advice shaun. Hows things over ur neck of the woods? the fires and stuff
