Suicide Short film DVX +mini35

Hey all -- Joel here, I directed SUICIDE and produced CONVENTIONEERS -- yes, we used 9 cameras for various reason (two of them were siezed by the NYPD and held for several months, for example), but mostly because we shot a ton of documentary footage and had to be in multiple places at the same time. We used the P+S Technik Mini35 adapter for some of it, when we could go single camera (we could only afford one). When we say the movie cost less than $500k, we mean it cost WAY less than 500k. Let's put even a little more emphasis on the "WAY" part.

SUICIDE cost about $3k, most of it spent on the fx, the technik rental, and the gun shop. We really just shot it as a test for the Technik as we'd never worked with it before. In regards to the orangy-ness, i think that's just because we really had no light package and we hadn't used the camera as much back then (2004). We were just messing around. It was also shot on the original 100, as the A hadn't even come out yet, so it looks a little rough around the edges.

And I agree, it is one long, drawn out joke, but we think it's funny anyway.

On a somewhat unrelated note, how did you guys aquire financing for the feature, a low budget indie shot on dvx seems like it would be hard to finance. I would really be interested in hearing your story if you have the time. Did you have any other features under your belt before this?

-Jake

We self-financed the movie. Didn't really have much choice, as we dreamed it up about six weeks before we shot it...

On SUICIDE, believe it or not we used a shotgun (I forget which kind) running straight into the DVX. I did all the mixing in FCP, pulled sound fx from here and there. I'm generally not a fan of doing that, but in a pinch it can sound okay. The gunshots are from a CD that Technicolor hands out of the 100 most requested sound effects -- awesome if you can find it.

JZalutsky,

About the self financing ... self financed a budget UNDER 500K .... WAAAY under is what the post says.
...what's the total credit limit for you and your 3 closest friends? ;)

I think Joel is an example to everyone on here .... he did it. He made it happen. He didn't have other peoples money, or big named actors. He had an idea and some friends that all loved film. He said "f*ck it ... we're going to shoot this movie" and he buckled down and did it.

I think that's all it really takes. At least to get started.

Hey MojoTrancer, what were your settings of the video you uploaded to Youtube, everytime im uploading using H.264 15fps, the video always gets pixelated. I wanna know how i can obtain the same quality video you do on youtube.

PM sent. Let's keep the thread about this funny and entertaining short film.

Amazing...Cinematography was outstanding, and the acting was much better than most threads. Fantastic, except for the ending...was a little abrupt and random...but good job overall

Yea, thats really cool you guys did it....that post wasnt supposed to be negative...im just amazed....if the budget is that under 500k....why dont you say 450k....or 400k....w/e it is haha....I mean either way still alot of money to self finance and thats awesome he did it....that is dedication.

We don't like to advertise our budget because, with features, it's not the best strategy to make yourself look small... advertising how little your budget was doesn't really do you any favors...

Sure the short was great! But what about the feature made by the same people and the same cameras? Wouldn't it be just as entertaining??
