I'm helping some friends out by filming their upcoming fitness competition. I'm excited as it will stretch my skills, and allow me to experiment with some gear and some technique.I've shot one competition before, but it was super last minute, and basically someone through a cheap flip cam at me. We are spending a lot of time walking through the event, and storyboarding what we want to end up with.
Right now I have:GH2 w/ 20mm, 14-42mm, FD 50/1.4, FD 35-105/4.
ND filter
H1 w/ cheapy lav.
Top end gorilla pod.
Cheap tripod with semi, nice fluid head, and slider
Flycam nano
(and a gopro with lots of mounting and flying options, but that will be used much less).
The event will be broken up into three parts, spanning 8-5pm. I'll be outside almost all of the time. Each part has several heats, so have plenty of opportunities to get footage. The goal is to come away with a 3 minute event clip, and 3-5 30-45 second interviews. I'll have a second person filming with a GH2 and a kit lens for the crucial moments, as well as a different set of footage. She's less experienced than I, but has a better creative eye.
So, I'm thinking about renting some gear from borrowlenses, because I'd like to use this to test out some stuff. I'm considering:
VideoMic Pro - the gym is right by the highway, and I'll be doing some brief interview segments. I've tried cleaning up audio from the on camera mic before next to a highway, and that's tough. I probably won't have too much audio, but I've been looking at the VMP for a while, and it's only $20 to rent for a few days. I'll have it on camera, plugged into my H1 so I can monitor the audio, and still get ambient sound through the GH2.
Zacuto Striker - it's the cheapest rentable "rig", and seems like it would be quite nimble. I'm really worried about camera shake, so I thought anything would help. I've used my gorillapod as a makeshift rig, which has worked ok, and is nice to quickly set it up on the ground, or some other awkward setup. I'm most comfortable with the 20mm if full manual, and it has no OIS. Would the 20mm on the rig be better than the 14-42 handheld?Batteries - their cheap!
45mm 2.8 - this has OIS, and is way better than the kit lens, I don't be doing any macro shots at the event, but since I'm ordering gear, I thought a new lens would be fun. I love my 50mm FD, but autofocus seems important for something like this since I'm still a noob.
Thoughts on gear rental?
General suggestions for this type of event? I'm watching a bunch of videos to get familiar with the style, and hopefully will be able to contact someone to get some advice, but I thought I'd start here since we share the GH2 love.
Thanks!
