FS7: Suggestions for FS7 Firmware

I was going to post this on the Sony community website for Juan Martinez's attention. Some of these are familiar ideas and some are new. Some might be pretty easy to accomplish. Any corrections or additional things to add before I post tomorrow?

Suggestions for Sony FS7 Firmware

BUGS you already know about :
1- Slow Iris Dial
2 - Magenta 5600 Preset
3 - No LUTs in 4K
4 - No waveforms in 4K etc
- Changing Resolution can upset other settings.. eg Shutter Angle.

Issues well documented already in CINE EI
5 - No way to easily see what LUT is on and whether you are recording a LUT or not.
6 - No color balance controls over LUT's ( green/ magenta and adjustable Kelvin)
7 - Linkage between SDI 1 and recording LUT is Poor
8- Lack of Noise Reduction in CINE EI

SUGGESTiONS that might be easy:

9 To improve exposing Cine EI Slog in 4K and HDR:
- Expand the IRE level for zebras so they work down to 40 IRE
- Bring back the IRE level # readout that was in the F3 and EX-1
- Give us the VF HIGH CONTRAST MODE that is in the F5/55.
( Alister Chapman says this a very useful way to expose Slog if you don't have LUT's in HFR and 4K)
http://community.sony.com/t5/F5-F55/Viewfinder-High-Contrast-Mode-as-a-viewfinder-LUT-alternative/td-p/385954
- Add Noise Reduction

Other suggestions for User Clarity:

10 REVAMP THE STATUS PAGE
- This is currently pointless & redundant - telling us stuff we already know because its already on our VF or will change any second anyway like Iris setting. But it could be very useful.
WHAT WE NEED TO KNOW IS:
- LUT INFO - which one , in which outputs , ARE WE RECORDING A LUT
- MATRIX INFO - Is it User, Std, Hi Sat , etc
- GAMMA INFO (that can be on VF but would be better on a status page)
- GAMMA setting - (35, 40, 45 etc)
- This could be User Programmable

11 Allow a wider number of menu options to be programmed to user buttons -
- Toggle LUT ON/OFF
- Bring up LUT menu
- Bring up PAINT menu
- Headphone Output level to an assignable dial or button to bring up the menu setting.
(This is the only pro camera I know without a headphone level adjustment)

12 Create a "TRUE CUSTOM USER MENU" where the user can put any menu item he wants.
(This will greatly speed up the cameras cumbersome menus.)
Here you could put the things you really need quick access to on one page . The present user page is not.

13 Audio -
- Add a -10db Consumer Line level option for mixers that send that level out
- This is probably not happening , but i loved wider range of impedance choices in the EX and F3 line.
- Headphone level assignment choice mentioned above

14 Sony Lenses:
- 28mm -135mm is not wide enough PLEASE MAKE a similar 18mm-105mm with good manual focusing
Use the focus ring design for the EX-1/3 lenses. That was brilliant.
- Is it possible to slow down the push auto focus so it doesn't hunt so much.

- If possible a new version of 18-200 with better manual focusing .

Agree with all of this (I think)

You are aware there are many status pages?

-I would like to see a status page with a large RGB WFM - I would not even care if this did not run real time.
-ISO when assigned to a wheel (handy tip for non Canon/Sony lense users!) again reaction is way too slow.

4 - No way to easily see what LUT is on and whether you are recording a LUT or not.

Some handy hints on finding the status of the camera as it is now

"Am I in Cine mode?" - yes if EI is displayed after the ISO value.
"Am I viewing a LUT?" = yes if changing the EI value changes the image.

Such mental logistics should not be required.

You are aware there are many status pages?

Yes , but not with what i want to see except for the audio page. Critical things are buried way way down in menus and they are important to know immediately. Especially if you get a camera that is not yours or that someone else has used before you.

I completely agree.

The sony GUI looks like it is from a 1995 Betacam - it could look like an app. Even the NEX5n has a prettier and in some modes more intuitive GUI.

Len.

I think it might be worth splitting FW requests in to BUGS and CHANGES.

Magena is a BUG for example.

We have to manage our expectations to the processor power of the camera - HFR+LUT+WFM may demand too much of the processor.

---

A BUG for your list: Changing Resolution can upset other settings.. eg Shutter Angle.

Thanks - That's a good idea Morgan on Bugs . Changes are made to list above.
Yes I understand processor power may limit some requests , that's why i wanted to make suggestions that could be easy.

Just adding LUT's to the Status page would be a big deal.

FIRMWARE REQUESTS

Monitoring LUT plus Waveform Monitor in Cine-EI
Abbility to save a full camera preset to SD card so I can have setup A CINE (Cine-EI 4k etc) and setup B ENG (1080p HG7 etc) and switch between them.
Allow proper customisation of the menus so I can hide all the crap I don't use.

BUGS:
WB adjust in Cine EI
Magenta Bug on Present WB
Shutter Angle change bug
MORE CINEMATICNESS AND LESS SONY LOOKERATION :p

The "true custom menu" is a great idea. 99% of the time when using the menu I will be adjusting about 5 items, if they could all be on one page, that would save a ton of time.

- Headphone Output level to an assignable dial or button to bring up the menu setting.
(This is the only pro camera I know without a headphone level adjustment)

cant stress this enough! needed urgently!!
