suggestion for Market Place

cool little "title"
Once an item has been 'sold' wouldn't it be a good idea if the thread then is automatically deleted? The item is sold, over, done, finite. Why keep it up?

When we try to weed what's available and not available it's like a jungle.

If the item is no longer available and there are no secondary items on the list, I say get rid of the thread so what "is available" is more apparent and easier to surf through.

I'm just saying.

I disagree. I like to search for similar items that have sold in the past to get a gauge on what is a fair price for an item a my be listing.

So maybe have a drop down menu in front of the thread title with either a blank or SOLD as a choice that can be changed after the original post. That way you would see SOLD: FS in US Redrock. The SOLD would be a dead giveaway. Also, maybe add a search filter that you could check "do not include" if it has the SOLD in the title.

Just a thought.

That would require either php coding, either paid to be done or somebody here coding it, or if you go with a sub-forum it be alot of work to move topics once things sold. Another alternative to number 1 is to have mods change the title once things sold, but that still would involve alot of work.

The coding would involve <if/else> statement in the template file specificly for the market place forum id and some kind of check box on the edit post editor page. So I guess it could be done, but it's not like it would be a few clicks in the Admin control panel. They'd really have to get into the templates and php coding.

I like seeing the sold stuff to gauge used prices, it kinda polices itself because the people bump the unsold items and the sold stuff tends to get barried way back for the most part however as fast as electronics depreciate maybe have an auto delete where the listings get deleted after 90 days? I know I don't want to see used prices from 2 years ago.

This seems like it'll be the most practical way to do it in my opinion. It wouldn't even have to be a drop down, even if you could just change the thread title to include "SOLD" after its been sold. Than the search feature like Hawk said.

Can they have a box in the listing the lister can check then the title will appear in red after it has been sold?

All of it would require template changes and some kind of custom coded plug-in, to trigger any kind of change in wording or color, if was to be done without manual human input.

I don't mind the way it is already set up. I like to check out items that have sold also to figure out fair prices.

I'd like to see the Marketplace as its own forum with categories (such as cameras, lighting, audio, misc.) as subforums - instead of falling under the "Off Topic" forum as it is now. Perhaps, separating between "for sale" and "want to buy" threads.

That would take the least amount of set up with the forum software (vBulletin) and would make it easier for buyers to find what they're looking for without wading through things they're not interested in. It would also keep items from being knocked into page 3 (or beyond) so quickly.

Furthermore, I'll volunteer to help moderate it. Deep down, in places you don't talk about at parties, you want me on that wall. You need me on that wall. ;)
