Suggested workflow for a simple project

Hello

I need to edit a little bit of video for a web project. I'm not a video guy but I did play around with Premiere in college. I've downloaded the trial and I can find my way around well enough but I don't really understand the underlying metaphors to decide on a workflow/methodology. Here's what I've done so far …

* I have 15 minutes of rushes (single clip) with a stereo audio track recorded in camera

* I brought that into Premiere and created a sequence from the parameters of that clip

* I have a 15 minute WAV file that is recorded from a better mic than the in camera one

* I brought that into the sequence on a new audio track

* I lined up the video and WAV files (matching by eye/ear is close enough for my purposes)

* I unlinked the original clip from it's audio, deleting that audio, and then linking the new audio to it.

* There were bits in the video that definitely weren't needed (me walking in front of camera etc) so I razor-track'd them out and filled the gaps by dragging the cut parts next to one another

So now I have a sequence of the original clip cut into several parts. Here's what I need to do with this material

* 'Cross-fade' between any edits. I've worked that out - overlap video clips on same track and use 'cross-dissolve'

* I need to go through the 13 minutes of remaining footage finding short bits of footage that I want to use (might be from a few seconds in length to a minute at the most)

* I then want to build a four or five minute film that is a composite of any sequence or number of those parts

So I'm not sure how to best organise myself. I might repeat some bits. They won't necessarily appear in the correct order. For example there's a bit right at the end that I want to use at the beginning.

What's the suggested workflow? Should I turn every edit into a sequence so I have like a 'palette' in the project window from which I can build my composite in a new sequence?

Thanks
Jim

The best work flow is to record each shot as a separate clip, rather than one long clip for all shots.

Yeah fair point but then the subject didn't really lend itself to that. It's an improvised performance on an instrument - some of it was interesting some of it wasn't and obviously hard to know in advance.

In which case is my best approach to export once edited my "snippets" if you will as separate clips and start from there? If so, should I export with no loss in quality and if so will it be obvious how to do that from the export box?

Thanks
Jim

You can chop up your man clip in the sequence timeline and drag the parts you want back to the project window as sub clips, then treat them as 'clips' from there on.

What he said. Export portions of your main clip creates more work and isn't as efficient. Dragging portions of your clip with enough heads and tails will be more efficient. Just make sure you are placing them in appropriately named bins and titling them accordingly
