Suffering with the anamorphic

I've been shooting today and I have to say that I like the 16:9 aspect very much but it's horrible shooting with this adapter.

It makes me set very small iris apertures when the photometer tells me to set very open ones... and if I add light the scene mood is not the one I was after... if I zoom out or put the camera far away I can't get the framing I want...

Horrible. I think one of these days a friend of mine who is shooting with me will hit it with a hammer and will say that it was an accident...

Do you have the same problems as me? How do you manage with this thing?

thanks

My only advice is practice practice practice. Your using the recommended settings from barrys book? There are difficuilties, but if you can work around them the image quality is great. Lately I have been doing a lot of test shooting and have not removed the ana for maybe a month. I keep it on and shoot as much as I can with it. Starting a new short next week to be entirely shot using ana. I am 90% confident I can get every shot I want. I know what your saying though, to get a low aperture normally means a low zoom setting. Basically I am trying to operate on Barrys chart range on the diaganol that runs top left corner to botom right.

Hi ncje!

Yes, I'm using the settings from Barry's book.

The minimun aperture chart has Z and F numbers (the horizontal and vertical bars) every ten units (Z10, Z20...F40, F50...) what if the focus and zoom readouts are between them?

Say the camera reads Z65 and F55, what setting should we choose?

Before this we've had to use the Autofocus to Anamorphic Conversion chart to set a very accurate focal point. It's strange that after setting so accurate focal number we have to play with those increments of ten units later...

Thank you very much for your advice

I say when in doubt, choose to go conservative -- use the smaller f-stop if you're offered a choice. The whole point of the chart is to show the minimum f-stop necessary to achieve proper focus. If z50 on the chart recommends f/4, and z60 recommends f/4.8, and you're at z55 -- I say choose f/4.8. Err on the side of caution.
