sudden slo-mo effect

any tips or links on how to achieve that commonly seen effect where the motion of the footage suddenly goes to slow motion? for example like in a sport commercial when a hurdle jumper runs up to the hurdle then he or she goes into slo-mo in mid-air.

thanks

You can ramp in some cameras (mainly film) but otherwise the entire shot is shot in slo-motion and key-frames are added in post software which manipulates the time of the clip.

cool thanks Ryan! i am on an hvx200 by the way. i will do a test. do you think time remapping in fcp will work or would after effects be better in your opinion?

If you're on an HVX200, you can shoot 720/48fps and then play the footage at 200% speed on a 24p timeline, and then ramp down to 100% speed for the slow-mo stuff, then back up to 200% speed for the realtime stuff.

that doesnt work in fcp, fcp sux. you have to use the 48p timeline.

looks like i have a lot to try, which is great! thanks again to everyone and for the link djbobbyrhodes.

Keep in mind that when cameras ramp internally (unless I haven't heard otherwise) the change in frame rate is linear. I've always preferred shooting at my max fps and then being able to change speed by 'drawing' whatever curve i like. I would shoot max fps then remap in AE. I'd use whole frames, not use frame blending, I may use pixel motion if the footage is sharp enough and there's not too much detail.

This is something I used to do, I'd use the time tools in ae and use pixel motion between one frame and another. It looks cool.

Just a quick correction- it does work in FCP. In the HVX shoot in 720pn24 (720p native with a time base of 23.98) then change the frame rate in the Scene File to 48 fps. This clip will play back in slow motion in the camera, and you can use it in FCP in a 23.98 sequence just fine. The portion you want in real time needs to be sped up by 200% ...

another thought, just to share, i haven't seen this, but i've done it a coupla times with the effect you're after, I up the flicker like crazy and it feels great. just sharing. good luck :)

please excuse my lack of knowledge in this but what is 'flicker'?

Fake flicker, I use a 'film damage' effect or MB misfire, and just add flicker. It's where you feel like the projector light (if you will) is flickering. I do this cause to me watching it's like wow the slo mo is so slo mo the camera's going crazy. It's just a nice effect, but it's personal taste, I haven't seen it done. But it does feel like something.
