FS7: Success with Commlite Adapter

Hi Guys,

Just did a quick test with the Commlite CM-EF-NEX adapter with the FS7.

Seems much more responsive on the iris control than my Metabones Ultra and I can confirm no flashing of the iris when scrolling up or down. It's an £70 adapter easily found on ebay. Quality seems fine and fits well. Make sure you get the latest version as the older model didn't support full frame lenses from what I hear.

I thought I'd post my experience as It may help some of you guys out who are having problems with slow or flashing iris issues.

Uploaded quick video. sorry for the poor quality just filmed with my phone after doing another All Reset to get the waveform on again.

Wow where did that active EF adapter suddenly come from!? Looks great!

Very cheap and well built far more usable iris speed with zero flashing. If you notice in my video the iris change is almost instant it takes the actual display a little time to catch up and display the iris value. should help some of the guys trying to use the FS7 in run and gun situations.

So far tested with 24-70 2.8 v2. Testing other lenses and will update shortly.

I can confirm the adapter works very well with the following lenses so far.
Th dial need about a quarter turn for each iris stop. No more full turns :)

Canon 70-200L 2.8 v2
Canon 24-70L 2.8 v2
Canon 16-35L 2.8 v2
Tokina 11-16 2.8

for what it's worth been using the Commlite on Sony a7s since the summer with no issues on Canon 17-55 2.8, Canon 50 1.4 and Sigma 105 2.8 macro. Manual focus wouldnt work on Canon 18-135 stm - I presume because its focus by wire

How can you tell which version is current?

Do you have a link to the ebay auction you got that one from?

Here we go:

You may be able to find a local vendor.

I confirmed it was the latest version by asking the vendor, in the link above, if the version listed supported full frame lenses. I believe that the older version is now pretty much out of stock and I also recall that the older version didn't support full frame

What type of monitor hood / loupe is that?

It doesn't appear to be the loupe that came with the Fs7.

Is it just impossible for Sony to make it so that the iris control is more of a push / pull control than a spinning dial? Why not make it so that the iris is controlled by the little joystick thing on the hand grip? Push the joystick one direction, the iris closes until you release the joystick. Push the joystick the opposite direction and the iris opens until you release the joystick. Or, make the dial spring loaded so that you don't have to actually spin the dial as much as you simply nudge it one direction or the other. As long as you keep the dial advance in either direction it actuates.

Frustrating to witness Sony, Canon, and everyone else bumble and fumble with such a simple control. Just give us a rocker switch!! This doesn't have to be this difficult.

Guys may be I'm not explaining very well. The video I uploaded is also crap.

What I'm trying to get across is that the iris is changing faster than it is with my MB Ultra in ECO mode but with no flashing. A fair bit faster than Eco mode on the MB Ultra. Advanced Mode on the MB shows no flashing at all but requires almost a full turn and a half of the dial per iris stop. The iris changes quite quickly as you can see in the video but the displayed iris number takes the Pi%% to catch up.

For me this rate is just about usable for Run and Gun. If I need faster I have my MTF Effect adapter and control box which is working great just like it was on the F3.

It's the stock loupe with the eye piece folded down out of shot.

Thanks, for that, I've gone and ordered one myself. Even though my lenses are all Nikon mount, it's handy to have a Canon mount adapter as I have a lot of friends with EF lenses!
Eventually i'll invest in a Speedbooster but this will do for now.

Okay, I have both adapters and the Commlite is WAY better as far as the speed of iris change. On my Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8 the Commlite required 37 "clicks" of the Fs7 grip wheel to go from wide open to f/22. With the metabones II it took 190 clicks.

Commlite required roughly 10 spins of the wheel to go from f/2.8 to f/22 on the Canon 24-70mm, the metabones II required 48 spins of the wheel.

So the Commlite is about 5 times faster than the metabones. The Commlite is fast enough to be damn close to being usable in shot. The metabones? No way.

I ask again....is there SOME way to make the Fs7 zoom rocker control the iris? A hack? A physical doctoring? The zoom rocker is useless with EF glass anyway. Think about how sweet it would be if the zoom rocker on the Fs7 grip controlled the iris- and controlled it with infinite variability. The further you depress the rocker the faster the iris changes. One direction iris opens...other direction the iris closes.

Brilliantly explained. You get the point across better than I did with all my posts combined and my video. Thanks for posting. Hopefully it'll help some of the other FS7 owners out ther get reasonable speed Iris control.
