subtle visual cues on the storyboard ?

I've been reading about storyboarding, and a lot of the advice focuses on composition, angles, continuity, camera movement and character movement.
Camera movement is indicated by a white arrow apparently , while character movement by a black arrow.
Now, this may seem like a silly question but.... how do you indicate " out of focus " or " character coming into focus " in the storyboard? what about things like color isolation of one element in the frame, or slight use of animation in a film? I guess I'm thinking also of TV commercials, where heavy use of animation sometimes intercuts with video footage.

Here's one way.

HHmm.. interesting. So storyboard art must be run through Photoshop sometimes...

One cat I know uses a wide light gray marker to draw his out-of-focus elements, and a fine tip black for the in-focus elements. It ends up looking a lot like what David posted above.

I always thought that was pretty clever of him.

I suppose the same could be done with a sharp #2 pencil vs. a wide dull #3 or #4 pencil.

And of course charcoal would work too. I personally always find it a bit messy, my drawing skills are not all that good.

I sketch boards with a #2, scan into PS, and paint them with a stylus pen. There's a zillion ways to do it, I figure if I'm gonna go there I should at least enjoy it.

They look great on an iPad, though i can't draw to save my life.
