Stupid Question of the Day...

I have recently found this site & have been reading, reading reading...

I've always contended that everyone is allowed one stupid question per day.

Background;

I am by a significant margin a still photographer, not a video guy. That said I am working on a long-term still project right now and last week picked up a DVX100a to tape a behind-the-scenes making-of documentary. I'm tripping my way around FCP and have picked up a copy of Barry Green's DVX book. I have read of not using the camera to ingest tape into my Mac in an effort to reduce wear on the camera heads so,

My Stupid Question of the Day (a two-parter);

Part One; I also have an older Panasonic PV-DV151-K which has a Firewire port. If I use this camera as a transfer deck to move tape into my Mac, will I be able to delineate TC through FCP or will that be lost as the small camera has no TC capabilities?

Part Two; Will the tape I transfer be ingested as-shot? If, for example I shoot in 24p or if I use Squeeze mode, is that what will end up on my hard drive if the camera I'm using as a deck cannot shoot in those modes?

Many thanks in advance,

The transfer camera's capabilities are irrelevant. What you shot on the tape is what's on the tape (squeeze-mode 24p, etc). The tape will be directly digitally copied onto the computer, so all timecode, frame rate, and aspect ratio issues will be transferred directly. No worries.

There are small differences in how certain cameras handshake and such, but at the end of the day it's just lettin' the 1's & 0's fly from one place to another.

For instance if your program which you use for capturing has a setting for "Panasonic" or "Panasonic DVX-100", and you're using some random Canon camera to capture...you don't want to set the capture program to "Panasonic" or "Panasonic DVX-100"...It needs to be set-up for whatever camera you're using.....this is if you even need to set this up...I've had pretty good luck with just plugging cameras in and starting a transfer without setting anything up.....but your mileage may vary.
