F55: Stunning FS700 raw performance, really impressive!

120fps at 4K! Wow. I wonder if the raw upgrade allows a higher than 8-bit signal to be transmitted through the SDI port?

Once you go linear RAW on any camera the potential behind the sensor is unleashed, so it shouldn't be any surprise. The DVX100 Andromeda mod unleashed the full imagery capable by the DVX100 in 2005 by bypassing the camera compression, color space, and also increased the overall dynamic range by 2.5 stops.

Rumor is that the mod itself which was largely developed on the internet forums of DVX and DVinfo was later used by RED for the development of its RAW camera announced in 2006.

Anyway what's a shame is the footprint of the whole rig for the FS700 and for the price of it all I'd actually be tempted to go for a scarlet over the Sony in this case.

According to Alister Chapman yes and below

Per Dan Keaton

We asked for, and have now received, official permission from Sony to discuss bit-depths.

1. As Mike Schell reported earlier today, the HD-SDI output is 8-Bits effective in the 10-Bit HD-SDI format.

Thus, we understand the disappointment in this as everyone would just love for this to be 10-Bits in the 10-Bit HD-SDI format.

(But, please see my comments below).

2. The upgraded Sony FS700, in 2K Raw outputs 12-Bits linear. This is very good.

To obtain 12-Bits linear in a camera, one needs the image sensor to be greater than 12-Bits, say 14-Bits, but for image quality reasons, (and maybe some other reasons), the output is 12-bits.

Thus, when the Odyssey7Q records from the Sony FS700, in 2K Raw, up to 240 fps, we will be recording in 12-bit linear, in the Cinema DNG format.

Our test recordings have been at 12-Bit Linear Raw, in the Cinema DNG format. We have been recording in this format for a few days now.

And we have been using commercially available software to work with these industry standard files with great success.

That's quite a shame about the bit-depth through SDI on the Fs700 but really a surprise. Sony has to protect its higher end products F5/F55/F65, and there are likely far more people who want to shoot in 10-bit with a gamma curve vs. 12-bit linear RAW - a whole other animal in itself.

As an F3 owner I gotta admit that the FS700 with a convergent Odyssy 7Q and speed booster with IS and full frame is looking mighty attractive not too mention slo-mo, especially as it looks like you will be able to record to Raw and probably to 2K DNX & ProRes as well . That's pretty damn flexible. may just finally make that change . The big question is when - do I wait for the 7Q to come out or do it now before F3 prices drop even more? The only thing I will really miss is the shutter control.

Damn - means changing all my lenses from Nikon to Canon for speed booster and re-enginering the rig all over again. One frankenrig to another - all the add-ons useless.

Lenny, are you serious? More than an idle thought?

With all those extra expenses (glass and accessories aren't cheap) you could go for the F55, keep a lot of your add-ons (like the prolock), and avoid the frankinrig. Throw in global shutter, lower noise, color gamut, etc.

I'm aiming for compact, portable, all in one, and something that will last. The FS700 isn't checking too many boxes for me.

P.S. I'm glad to see that F3 prices have actually rebounded a bit as we all hoped they would.
