Studio Monitors

It seems like there are so many options these days for audio monitoring solutions. I'm looking to upgrade my audio editing setup. Not looking for anything crazy and don't really have a need for inputs, just affordable and decently high quality monitoring. I'm currently using a topping TP-30 amp which is connected to cheap sony bookshelf speakers. The amp is a pretty nice small amp that has a usb input and a DAC in it. http://www.amazon.com/Topping-TP30-Digital-Amplifier-USB-DAC/dp/B005D7SKWK/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1389660264&sr=8-1&keywords=tp-30

I'm considering upgrading the speakers to something nicer but maybe I should just buy active studio monitors? This would probably mean upgrading my computers cheap sound card to something nicer or getting an external DAC converter (or maybe I can re-purpose the tp-30 for the DAC?). I'm a little confused and don't really understand the benefits of equivalently priced studio monitors over an amp and bookshelf speakers. Any help or explanation would be appreciated.

Bookshelf/multimedia speakers are designed for thee end-user (consumer). They are not designed for neutral frequency response or accuracy.

This has been discussed in-depth in THIS THREAD active as recently as today.
