Studio Monitor

Hello Listers,

This is off topic for this list, but the responses in the hardware list are usually not very good.

I want to add a studio monitor to my Mac - FCP based edit suite. I use P2 DVC-ProHD for aquisition. To date, I have been using Apple Cinema displays for editing and then click-n-pray the look is right for export which is mostly to DVD and soon to BluRay. As my ability to shoot and edit grows, I want to add more color, etc to the process.

I am open to hardware suggestions, though I would prefer to avoid CRT screens just because of the space aspect. I have heard that plasma is better than LCD for color. I would prefer to stay below 32" but that is flexible. I don't have a budget on this yet but will spend what I have to for decent results.

Recently, there was discussion of this monitor as a good entry level choice:

What card (assume HDMI output) are you using to drive your monitor and why?

I am really starting from scratch on this, so any help or advice would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
Grant

thats still a consumer unit. not a production monitor.

there are a number of good, reasonably affordable options out there. the combo of the matrox mxo and apple cinema display gets good scores.

i have an old 16:9 capable sony pvm SD crt connected via firewire box (canopus advc110) that i get "parked frame" (i.e not realtime playback) DVCPROHD FCP timeline reference from. and from a cc standpoint what i see is pretty right on.

i also use a blackmagic decklink SDI card out to a used panasonic btlh1700 that works great! that combo was about $2100 (got a SWEET deal on the panasonic)

something id also suggest you check out would be a decklink studio card $700 out component to a smallhd dp1x $900. i dont know anyone using this combo, but it makes complete sense on paper... and would take up nearly zero desk space...

WGZN,

The Panny monitor I referenced was not considered a true reference monitor, but was given good marks at the price point.

So you are suggesting that a cinema display and a mxo would be accurate enough to do some color correction? That would be a pretty painless solution for me.

yeah, the original mxo+cinema display combo was reviewed by shane ross (who posts here and a lot at creative cow and lafcpug) he said it was pretty accurate. and that was a couple years ago, so id assume its only improved from there...

do your research though - as i recall, one of the things that i didnt dig about the original mxo was that it tied up your second desktop monitor. that may be different now. admittedly, ive not kept up...

i was about to buy the original version before i decided that as a designer, a second desktop monitor was important enough to me to find another solution...
