studio HD

Anyone know when Studio HD is coming out ?
NAB possibly?

A friend of mine wants to put protools on his Mac and Xpress Pro HD on his PC. He says he NEEDS HD, so I thought the studio package (HD) on one computer would be better.

Also if you have Pro Tools and Xpress Pro on the same computer, have you
had any hiccups ?. Tips would be appreciated.

I have Xpress Pro HD and ProTools on the same computer. When I launch ProTools it gives me a warning about an incorrect driver version, but I click cancel and have never had a performance issue. Knock on wood.

However, if I had the option of having Xpress Pro on a PC and ProTools on a Mac I'd jump at the chance. Seperate computer, plus I've heard that ProTools runs better on a Mac. If that's what your friend wants to do, and he has the resources, why stop him?

Thanks for responding.

Yeah, I would've told him to go ahead but I'm concerned about
having to use that mac drive software etc to move files back and forth... and also how
the digitranslator and/or dv toolkit software might fit in.

Personally I take all my media over to a sound editor/designer/composer
after final picture lock, magic happens, then we do a final online session.

After running the numbers my friend will have to spend around
$ 25,000 Canadian for his little mini studio, so I don't want
to waste his money. And he's looking to hire a DP with his own
SDX 900 ( that's another story).

OT - do you do all your own music composition ? My hats off to you Sir if you do.

mac drive software

I wouldn't worry about that. If you have an external drive formated with a Mac file system, then Macdrive does a fine job of mounting that drive in windows, then you can copy back and forth.

digitranslator and/or dv toolkit

It would be installed on the system with ProTools (obviously) and then you can export OMFs from Avid with embedded media. Or if the media can be housed on a server, you could export an OMF with media links and open that in PT. If you're planning on using firewire drives (it sounds like you are from your post) then this should be no problem. Not as fast or easy as having both programs on the same system, but again that needs to be weighed against having Avid and ProTools seperate.

No, I'm not that good. I can barely pick out the Top Gun Anthem on a guitar. I have a friend who is very sharp with music and I generally hire him to do compositions for me. He has a ProTools setup too so it's really easy for us to collaborate.

Is it worth the extra money to upgrade from the 5.1 hd to the studio complete.

Tough question, with a different answer for everyone. For starters I would suggest not making any major purchases until after NAB. You never know what might be coming. Also, Xpress Pro HD is beyond the version of Xpress Pro that ships with Studio. Studio users are still on version 4.5 of Xpress Pro. A fine version to be sure, but if you've gotten used to normal pulldown remove via firewire, or realtime effect output over firewire, or Digital Cut options in a 23.976 project, etc. Then realize that "upgrading" to Studio is actually going to cause you to go back several versions of Xpress Pro.

Now the real bonus of Studio is the connection between applications. If you don't have an effect program, an audio program, a 3D program, and a DVD authoring suite, and you really need all of those components, then yes, Studio is worth the money. Furthermore, Studio allows the Mojo and the Digi002 to work in tandem, which can be a real boost. Avid FX is a repackaged Boris Red meaning that it works through Avid's plugin archetecture. Avid ProTools LE comes with DVToolkit allowing it to open OMF exports from Avid (that alone would cost an extra $1,000 if you were doing that without Studio). And I'm sure there are other ways that it works together that I'm not even aware of.

Personally Studio is not for me. I aquired several alternatives to the Studio components before Avid released Studio. After spending money on Xpress Pro, Combustion, ProTools, and DVD-lab, the idea of spending more money to have another effects program (Avid FX), another audio tool (Avid ProTools LE), and another DVD authoring tool (Avid DVD) didn't work for me.

Hope that helps.

No. There's still a pretty big gap between Xpress Pro and Adrenaline. Many people are hoping that the gap is filled soon, but who knows.
