Student Film

Wow. I have to say that it impressed me! I cilcked on the ilnk not expecting to finish the film because i thought it was going to be terrible - the titles really turned me off....I mean the opening titles were the weakest bit of the film. It got me thinking that what i was going to watch was something really really amatuer. However, i got hooked when i watched it, and watched it through to the end, and i really liked how you treated it. Good job, but i would really really change the titles. The film looked great to boot!

I thought it is the other way round... somehow liked the titles but not the film itself. I was not shot bad or anything it was just the fact that it started with an alarm clock ringing and ended with "it was everything just a dream". For me this is typical for a student film. Even trying to make fun of the typical student film is typical student film. It is similar to a film about somebody who doesn't know what to film. Don't get me wrong, I don't want to be rude or smash our film. It was well made and I liked the low angle shot when he opens his pants in front of the toilet. I am probably going to copy this one for one of my own productions :-)

Michael

Hey, good job, I'm a fellow student film maker myself! If you'd like, you can hit up my youtube channel and tell me what you think about my films.

Just for constructive criticism's sake, I feel that while you were trying to make some sort of climax, you fell short by sort of making the film a bit too... monotonous. If it was your artistic decision, then by all means do so. I'm just saying that if you were aiming to grab the breath from me when the actor had his gun out, I would've liked a bit more excitement. Maybe crush more blacks and have some quickly cut shots to sort of pace it right? Just a suggestion.

The again, the mood of the film kinda distances itself away from such structure.

Anyways, yea. Good stuff!

They let me use my hvx that i got before going to the program. My instructor was tim nutall.

I see. Must've been pretty nice to be showing off an 8-week film in HD! My honest opinion: Although I kinda like the look of it, It probably could've benefited from some more lighting design (or any at all), and I know you pointed out the fact in the opening that your film included cliche's, but that doesn't really make it less cliche. Dream sequences, and suicide are SOOOOOOO overused in student films. It just seems to be what everyone jumps to when they want to do something "edgy" or dramatic. Over all though, I like the shots, and the pacing was pretty good. I do have to ask why you decided to cross back and forth over the line when the "hooker" was on the bed, instead of finding a better angle to cut to on the correct side of the line. Maybe an insert of the money in the pimp's hand, or a close up on either of their faces. Would've been more interesting than just moving the camera to either side of the bed. Anyway, it's still a good film over all, and you should definitely keep it up, just remember not to make the same mistakes again. :) Film making is ALL about making mistakes. We all make em (myself included), and the difference between the greats and the not-so greats is being able to learn from those mistakes.

Francis Ford Coppola said that the great films and the terrible films have the same amount of flaws, its just that in the great films you're so involved with the movies emotions/ideas/story that you don't notice the flaws. That's a paraphrase, it's on the Finnian's Rainbow dvd commentary.

And I agree that the lighting could improve.
