Wasup Everybody...

I am a student at Full Sail in Orlando, Florida and I just recieved the position to DP on of our class projects. The script is about a hitman so with that in mind, Road to Perdition immediately came to mind. I love Conral Hall's work on this film so i wish to get that kind of look for our groups video. For some reason they have us shooting on broadcast cameras in 60i ( i think the point is to help us learn those kind of cameras?). Im assuming I will have to desaturate the image a lot in post, but i really want the blood to stand out. I also like Vilmos Zsigmonds work on The Black Dahlia.

Does anyone have any advice that will make it easier for me to achieve the look that Road to Perdition or the Black Dahlia achieved?

Noir is all about the lighting. Get some good books on film noir and use the stills as reference. Start with complete darkness and build up only what's necessary to tell the story, hard light, slashing across.

Dress everyone in grey/muddy colors, and make the sets monotone, then desaturate a little bit. this way brighter colors will still pop, but for the mostpart it will look b&W.

Watch the film, "the Limey". Thsi is a film in color, that is kinda drab, and dry in look. see what you think.
