Strongroom Sessions

Every now and then I shoot the live bands that show up at my local bar - The Strongroom in Shoreditch, London.

I shoot on my AF101 (usually with a 50mm prime Nikon F1.8 stills lens) on a tripod to get the closeups and then use a Lumix G3 with a Lumix 14mm F2.5 as the B camera getting the wide shot. Sometimes I have a friend or two who join me and they usually have a Canon 5D, 7D or 60D. I sometimes also use a GoPro camera on the drums or attached to a mic stand.

The artists perform under strong spotlights and the contrast between light and dark can be difficult on the cameras so I can end up with varying results.

This is one of the better videos. The guitarist had driven 200 miles from Manchester to play the gig and turned up late. He literally got out of his car and without a sound-check just started playing.

This is an up and coming artist named Kyla La Grange. We used a number of cameras for this - mainly Canon cameras. My AF101 is the one that concentrates on Kyla in closeup. I used an old 85mm F2.0 Nikon lens.

This is a band called The Brute Chorus and my camera is the one directly in front of the lead singer getting the close-ups again. I think these videos show how it is possible to match the AF101 with Canon cameras quite successfully.

Nice stuff Gary!
I liked the straight forward simplicity of the performances. You can see that the talent is there with the musicians as well I'm sure its a nice promo piece for them to showcase their live shows abilities.

I have a job coming up in 2 months that I want to do about the same thing with my ( new to me) AF100, a Canon 7D and two Contour POV cameras. What setting profiles do you use to match up the different cameras?

Liked them all Gary.

Very nice work ...and I know its tough in those tight conditions too.

The Sorrow piece was my favourite. Liked the photo style and close visual. ( Wondered a bit about the synch though?) DOF worked really well here.
