Strobing!

I'm having some strobing issues with some dolly footage. I know all about keeping an object 7 seconds within the frame, staying focused onto something as the camera pans and all that jazz. The problem is that the footage is silky smooth in my crt monitor but jerky on my plasma tv once burned onto a dvd.

Q. Is there something to this? Should I be looking into bitrate issues?

ps. I shot in 24pa and edited in Vegas in 23.976 timeline.

Sounds like something's going wrong in the DVD burning process. Or that your DVD player isn't set to progressive mode, or something like that.

How does that DVD look on the CRT?

...it's 12 seconds

however, it sounds more like you're taking the pulldown out when you edit and your burning software's putting it back in. Happened to me with iDVD, it doesn't know about 24p so it puts the extra frame back in. on the dvd player play frame by fram and i bet the 5th frame is a duplicate everytime.

The mpeg-2 looks fine on the crt. Not on the tvs. I just tested it on a regular tv and it's very stuttery as well.
What settings should I be using when rendering to dvd in Vegas?

Cheesesailor,
You were right!!! I went ahead and checked on the progressive idea but that was not the issue. Every 4th frame has been duplicated. What should I do now to fix this? I don't have DVD Artchitect just Vegas 6. I use the roxio mydvd edition that comes bundled with the xps???

that was my problem too, iDVD's packed in with all macs. Unless someone else knows, the pack in software maight not be able to make a 24p DVD. You might have to buy toast or some such. I have DVD Studio Pro which should handle it fine, but i still don't know how to use it.

same boat dude, same boat :)

OK! I did what Barry said. The 24p rendering setting in Vegas was the solution. Once it was rendered correctly then the dvd burning software handled the frames correctly. THANKS so MUCH for your quick assistance. This makes me see that it's easy to forget sometimes to render with the proper settings based on your output source. I appreciate this help guys!

Barry, is there a similar setting in FCP or am i shi* out of luck with iDVD?

Isn't there a 24p rendering template in FCP as well for DVDs?

not that i know where is or how to use. I always export as a quicktime movie, which should be the highest quality output, framerate intact. The quicktime file doesn't have the extra frame when i watch it, but after iDVD encodes it, that damn frame's back in! Most of the time you don't notice it, but in dolly or pans it can be paaaaaaaaaainful. :(

I'm using Roxio MyDVD LE which is also very basic but it worked fine when I tried it after rendering it correctly. You would think iDVD would be able to handle that as well though.

I'm pretty sure this is one of the ways Apple "persuades" people to shell out for DVD Studio rather than just using iDVD.
