Strobing 24P Solution...

I have just got a dvx1000B and like others here I got an extraordinary amount of strobing/jerky video in 24p, Some users have also been reporting this problem, and I know that it was not an issue with the format (24p) or the camera, however the footage was not looking right when imported.

After playing for a while I decided that it would be a good idea to read the manual, as importing the footage as 24p, 24i 23.98p&i, and 29.97p&i was not working.

I found that the manual states simply that the camera converts all footage to 60i on output (regardless of regular or advanced 24p) therefore the footage going to the computer was forced into 60i.

Therefore to get smooth cin-like (a small amount of pleasing strobing) motion you need to import the footage at 60i. When I changed to 60i the difference was HUGE!

Just thought I would give a helping hand to all those users that were disillusioned with their new toys...

Think we might have the same problem.......
Do you have Barry Green's DVX book? On page 34 under Frame Rates and Slow Motion, as stated "When using 60i in a 24P timeline, the propoer slowdown speed is 40%"

My question is this: Do you have to render your 60i/40% slowed down clip from the 24P timeline and import it to your 60i timeline to have a glass smooth playback?

I didnt really quiet get this....Pls help.....

My suggestion was more to do with proper capture rather than slowdown, however there is something that you should look into.

During my capture testing I also did some slowdown (10-20%) and I found that there where more duplicate frames that were created on some clips than on others.

After a little research I found this (more advanced 24p users can correct me here):

That in 24p regular there were are a few more duplicate frames created when the camera makes the transition to 60i as it exits the camera. However, 24p advanced omits more of the duplicated frames in 60i output therefore the footage will be smoother in 24pa.

With that said i am generally still trying to figure out the smooth slow motion thing especially working in 24p, as my results are still a little un-smooth, I just did not want to complicate this thread.

Always a good idea.

All of this is based on which editor you have. Most editors now have presets for importing 24pa footage. It's important to understand what's going on rather than flailing at changing numbers.

24pa will in fact not be smoother in 60i since it's not field blending frames.

For those interesting in shooting slow motion do a search. 60i provides smoother slow motion (assuming you can set your editor to 23.98 on import) 30p provides higher res images.
