"Striping" procedure

MichaelP:

Ok, I just got 2 new SATA 300GB (16Meg cache) hard drives. I'd like to know the exact procedure to "stripe" (initialize/format) them strictly for Avid usage. In the BIOS, I set the drives for 32Bit transfer enabled.

Thanks,

Re: "Striping" procedure

We use the standard drive utlitlites that are part of the OS. Just go to the drive utilties, select both drives and stripe them as a pair. NTFS is the formatting "format". You can use "Quick Format" so you don't wait hours.

Re: "Striping" procedure

Ok, I did a quick format and all looks good. Is "striping" different than "formatting?"

Thanks,

Re: "Striping" procedure

Yes it is. Now that the drives are formatted, you want to stripe them. I'm not in front of a system with multiple drives to take you through the steps, but you can search the WIndows XP Help for how to do this.

Re: "Striping" procedure

I figured it out. I can, indeed, "stripe" the drives. I was reading up on what "striping" actually is . . . it seems that it makes the drives work together, almost like a RAID?

My concern is that these are removable drives that I will eventually be swapping out with (future) additional drives that I will expand to as my editing projects demand. So, should I still "stripe" them or leave them as 2 seperate and dynamic NTFS-formatted volumes?

Thanks,

Re: "Striping" procedure

It's harder to move striped drives around as the striping information needs to travel with them. Teh purpose of a stripe is to increase the bandwidth of the drive allowing for hiogher resolutions or real time streams. If you plan on using these as editing and shutle drives, I would not strip them.
