String Theory - ***NSFW***

Hahahahahahaha.

Okay, damn good short, dialogue and acting but the dancing was HORRIBLE. I felt awkward watching her dance. It was waaaay too fast to be seductive. But the ending made up for everything.

Nice work.

You laughed and felt awkward. I assure you that's by design. The film is intended to be be vulgar, not sexy.

Glad you enjoyed it!

If you want people to "feel free" to "share" their "thoughts," you should probably develop a thicker skin -- especially when the whole point of your piece, through its over-the-top lewdness and vulgarity, was to evoke a reaction. Some people just aren't going to like it.

Trash is never art.

You're offering your opinion as absolute fact, just as David Jimerson did when he wrote "Shock is not the same as art".

You can't possibly be so arrogant as to think that your opinion is an authoritative declaration of what's trash and what's art.

Human creativity is a matter of taste and opinion. What's trash to you may not be trash to someone else.

Well, "shock" ISN'T the same as "art."

Doesn't mean art can't be shocking, but something isn't art just because it's shocking.

But if you'd like to discuss your view of the overarching artistic merit of the piece, then by all means.

which is what he said in the 2nd sentence of his post. which came immediately after the part you quoted.

The point here is, you said "feel free to share your thoughts". It's a racy piece. Surely, you didn't expect it to appeal to everyone's sensibilities?

I thought the ending was chuckle worthy. didn't offend me. just silly.

How dare somebody state what they think art is. As we all know, some time ago, somebody upset somebody else by offering their ideas about art. So now, as we all know, everything is art as long as you state so with good nature when you make it. And this of course is all fact and not opinion, because as we know, someone offering their opinion means that person is trying to pass it off as a fact UNLESS said person clearly states "BUT that's just my opinion" thereby nullifying the preceding sentence with any sort of importance or passion. Therefore, everyone can like whatever they want and we can declare Lady Gaga as high art and we all celebrate and hug each other in the streets forever.

But back to the short,

I think it could stand to be cut down a bit. Maybe loose a minute, especially during the dancing. Yes, it was awkward so you hit your mark there but it wasn't interesting. It didn't move the story forward and there was no conflict so basically you are relying on the awkwardness to sell the sequence, but in reality it isn't even really that weird. It just looks like someone who has no idea of how to dance.

I would also keep in mind how set design works with your lighting. While it wasn't bad, it certainly was lit and it didn't look like the space two people would be spending time in on a date after the bar. Maybe that was your intent, I don't know.

Congrats on getting it shot though.

How dare somebody state what they think art is.

But isn't that exactly what YOU are doing? Stating what IS art?

If everything is art, then I declare my written words "Trash is never art" to be ART. So how DARE you or anyone else criticize it!?

For heaven's sake, people -- these are OPINIONS. Get used to them. Not everything ever created is "art" -- which is a vague term to begin with. Everyone is entitled to decide for themselves whether or not something has artistic merit.

I never said that my film is art. You brought up the word "art".

I haven't once discussed or defended the merits of my film in this thread, and I'm not going to. I've simply pointed out that you've made an arrogant and narrow minded statement about what is "art" and what isn't.

Jason, "Chapelgrovefilms" contradicted himself. He said:

Trash is never art. And people have EVERY right to determine for themselves what THEY consider to be art.

If people have the right to determine art for themselves, how can he say "Trash is NEVER art"?

Really? Never? That statement leaves very little room for others to determine art for themselves, doesn't it?

Not bad Matt Hoss. I admire the desire to be provocative. Would like to see it grounded in a less (seemingly) self-absorbed character that will play on my empathy, giving me a way to access the scene on a deeper level. I think this could only benefit the work with more truthful interaction between the characters next time.

And with regard to the cutting, think of each cut as being there to push the story forward. Generally, if you're cutting to a new shot but repeating info we already have, something is wrong with the scene. Even the dancing could tell a story. Until the string drops, I don't think it does and that's why folks here are calling for it to be cut down.

So . . . shock IS the same as art? Anything shocking is art? Anything art is shocking? (If your answer is "no" or "not necessarily" to any of those, then you agree with me, dude, as I think most people would.)

If you don't want to discuss your film, why did you ask for people to share their thoughts?

And let me ask you -- for you, what was the point of this? If it wasn't meant to be art -- an expression of an idea or thought or feeling -- then what was it meant to be?

David, I never brought up the word "art" or attempted to define it, you and Chapel did.

You invited me to discuss the "artistic merit" of my film, and I declined because that would just be a load of pompous BS. A film stands on its own legs, good or bad.

Everyone is free to share their thoughts, but so am I. It's a two way street here. If someone makes a pompous declaration that "your work isn't art" or "that it's trash", I'll point out their narrow minded arrogance.
