Strike Update

It would be one thing to ***** about the content of Bollywood movies. I won't, personally I think that stuff is good fun.

That said, I think the big issue with a lot (but not all) of musical films made in India is that they have poor technical production values. I'm not talking about story and editing (which is subjective) but quantifiable stuff like poorly developed film stock, poor framing, continuity problems, majorly distorted sound. There are a lot of problems with a good amount of films made in India, that even the beginning film student gets kicked out of their head the first week of film school.

The fact remains that the technical quality of many films (again, not all) made in India are very poor. I think the issue is that of a minimum production standard. I've seen some amazing movies from India, but there is a lot more garbage in technical standpoint than the good stuff. There are a lot of garbage movies in Hollywood too, but at least the sound isn't distorted, the composition screwed up nor are there ever cuts to the Swiss Alps for no reason.

Bollywood studios are chop shops. Shoot monday, edit tuesday, hit the market Wednesday. This is typical of film business in developing countries.

Maybe for now. It is changing however, and faster than you think.

You make it sound like it's a practice across the board. Sure about that?

Also, it's a common practice for zero budget and low budget indies in so callled 'developed' countries.

Even a technical disaster can have a great story. You just need to develope more than one merit for film.

Box office take certainly has teeth, and production quality certainly has teeth, but so does story, and that counts for a lot whether you're in a 'developed' country or not.

Define developed.

Thanks for the perspective in this spirited discussion. Excellent points.

Speaking of Swiss Alps, a number of European countries have opened their doors to Bollywood filmmakers. It might be clumsy now, but these filmmakers have all their ducks lined up to take it to the next level. Meanwhile, Hollywood remains stuck in the tarpits of hagling.

I recommend writers start suing, either as individuals, or in class actions, to get their issues settled. Lawsuits have painful teeth.

Just an option ...

Isn't that how musicians got the free music downloads to stop?

The most effective lawsuits were not done by individual musicians, but by the RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America), which is a trade group that represents the recording industry - record labels and distributors (not the artists directly). They are essentially a union for the record industry.

Wow, these Strike Updates appear to have turned into Alex Whitmer v. Everyone. It's kind of like
EmoteHeadbang.gif
or

.

I would think it obvious that he's not going to sway others to his position. Especially, as I see that his arguments "against" do not seem as well reasoned as some of the arguments "for". Sad Max has been particularly cogent in this respect.

I'm not trying to sway anyone, just play devil's advocate, and point out that it isn't so black and white as it seems.

You're right about Sad Max. Always well reasoned, and continually finding faults with my arguements.

Alright, so what do writers need to do to make this lasting?

I'm not convinced the union thing will be a long-term fix.

As I understand it, the internet is being overhauled as we speak, and it will be an international effort. It will no longer be under the sole ownership of the US.

The whole planet now depends on it, and we are still feeling its ramifications, and will continue to do so for milenia. Maybe the new internet will have some kind of controls over piracy.

Okay, now I'm really swinging blind.

Why are we arguing about definitions? This is a film forum, not a philosophy forum. We're not philistines, we're filmmakers. That's my $0.02. Let's go make some movies.
