SHORT: 'Strike at Dawn' | production thread |

Hello all,

I've been following the DVXuser forum from the sidelines for a couple of years now and as I'm in the process of making my own short film right now, I'd like to share the process and progress with some fellow filmmakers as yourselves. As this is my first post, why not try and make it a good one

June, 1944. To ensure an Allied victory following the Normandy invasion, a small group of Belgian commandos, in service of the British army, is sent out on a mission to disrupt all German communications between the beaches and the rest of occupied France. Things start to go terribly wrong as the commandos stumble upon a saddistic German officer and his troops in a remote countryside village. When the German commander is not only about to lose his grip on the town's occupation, but even on his own men, things are about to go downhill very fast...

----------

I've been wanting to do a short or feature set during the 2nd world war for a long, long time. That particular period of modern history has always fascinated and intriged me. Why? I don't know... The events, the strategies, the different sides of the war... It often was a time when true heroes fought for our future and while that period should never have to repeat itself, we should never forget about it either.

Although I originally had the intention to make an 'historical' film, I abandoned the idea early 2010, during yet another rewrite... I sadly came to the conclusion I would never have the resources and cold hard cash to pull it all off and do it all the justice it would deserve.

In stead, I've turned it around into a mix between fact and fiction. As the setting will be historically correct - being the costumes, vehicles and props - the events and characters will be completely fictional. Which gives me more freedom to turn it into a 'good old' action movie, set during the war, with a few not-your-every-day characters and a twist.

Not comparing myself with Tarantino (not by a long shot ), but I'd like to tackle this thing in an 'Inglourious Basterds' kind of fashion.

----------

I'd like to make good use of this thread by posting the most significant updates during the (pre/post)production process and by documenting how this thing turns out. I've reserved some posts below for additional updates and behind the scenes information.

----------

Finally, I'd also like to take the opportunity to try and generate some interest to help me find some additional funding for this project. I've started a funding campaign on Indie-go-go and would really appreciate it if (some of) you would be willing to help me raise the rest of the budget.

Either by donating yourself, or spreading the word around on the internet, amongst your friends, colleagues,... anywhere, basically.

Thank you all for reading and I hope to be back soon, with some updates!

Scheduled some meetings with reenactors and property owners over the next couple of weeks,
to discuss the possibilities of shooting some scenes of the movie with them. Fingers crossed.

Made a few concepts for the costumes and uniforms. Belgian commandos are up first.
Their uniforms are not going to be entirely historically correct, but that's completely intentional.

About 90% of the volunteering actors have been assigned to a character in the film. So far so good!
The cast/crew section of the site got updated aswell (http://www.strikeatdawn.com/strike_cast.html)

After having appeared on local and national TV, the crew is gearing up for another shooting day, next week.
Involving some major dialogue, action and an original Opel Blitz, this should be intersting...

note: Swastika symbol only used in it's historical context. no more, no less.

You have my interest in this.

On your poster.......discuss your vision on why there is a Nazi soldier in front of the swastika. At first blush and the impression I get from that poster, this is a film about the Nazi soldiers, which in your description, is about Belgian Commandos. Just curious. And, IMO, I would be interested in seeing a period film about a Nazi "foot soldier's" POV. i.e Valkyrie. I think that a film like that, that tries to explain the actions and thought processes behind what the common German soldier did is something not explored properly in film. Not to say I agree with what they did, far from it. But what inner conflicts did they have, was it true blind obedience, did they all believe what the heirarchy told them? I think that would make a great film. And a difficult one to make.

Cannot wait to see some footage!!!!!!!!! I love WWII films.

PS: If you are starting to "get the word out" I highly recommend finishing the website ASAP. "Under Construction" is not a good way to promote the film and for the next 2 weeks, you may be losing many good "first impressions".

This poster is more of a character poster than a true promotional piece. For the soldier, there is no other way than the 'nazi way', so to speak.
It overshadows his entire being. There is no choice... go along with it, or go nowhere. In fact, while the mission of the Belgian commandos is what will move
the story or the film along, it really is about a young Wehrmacht soldier, starting to question his patriotism and the ways of the German army, the nazi's and the third Reich...

This will not be a 'heavy' film or anything, but as far as I see it, most of those Wehrmacht soldiers, were just boys and young men serving their country.
Just because they happen to be wearing the 'wrong' kind of uniform, doesn't mean they were pure evil... far from it.

The website is (almost completely) up and running, btw ;)

First 'official' trailer for Strike at Dawn is online...

Plus, here's what one of the new character posters looks like:

This one still is 'in the making'... the rough (no FX) cut has 59 minutes and still counting...
Will get there eventually; will be done, when its' done ;)

Looks great so far, what are you shooting on? Incase I missed it earlier. I have to be honest, I hate the font on the poster, It looks so comic book, reminds me of "last action hero, or indiana jones for some reason. The score is a bit to commercial (generic) for my taste. everything else is great!! Love the german with the busted eye, lol
