Streaming size?

It may be the wrong title for what I'm asking about. I wanted to put some HD video on my site to stream. When I did the quicktime conversion, the quicktime movie I ended up with was still 92.9 MB. That is at H.264. It's big file to put on my little site...and I think it will take a long time for people to be able to load the page. How does one get a good size picture at H.264 quality to stream quickly and be able to keep it on their page?

How long is the video? The only way to reduce the size is to lower the bitrate. If the quality is no longer acceptable, you'll also have to reduce the resolution.

How are you encoding the audio? That's sometimes overlooked.

The video is 2.5 minutes long, 720 24P. I'm doing an automatic conversion in FCP. I initially did the conversion with the following settings using the Qicktime Conversion choice...which were Quicktime movie, Default settings (this ended up being 92MB). The default settings were:
For Video:
H.264
Quality: High
Frame rate: 24
Frame reordering: yes
Encoding Mode: multi pass
For Audio:
Format: Integer (Big Endian)
Sample rate: 48.000KHz
Sample size: 16 bit
Channels: stereo (LR)
And it was set for Internet Streaming: Fast Start

I made another conversion using just the Quicktime Movie choice...not the Quicktime Conversion choice and this time had everything the same except I chose Broadband Medium instead of Fast Start. This gave me a pretty small window but also a small file size...5MB.

Some of the folks here post some very nice sized windows that start almost instantly when you open them. That is what I'm trying to do. Any tips would help. Thanks

The Integer encoding of the audio is what's killing you -- that's uncompressed audio. Change it to MACE 6:1 or IMA 4:1, those deliver a good compromise between size and quality.

In addition to the audio, go to "options" in the Quicktime conversion>Settings..and check your bitrate...it's probably set on automatic. Set this to control your quality/speed-of-download...you could start at about 700-800kps for standard DSL and go up from there.
