Streamclip setting for FCE

Hey Guys,

I've been converting my D90 AVI's to MOV using Apple Intermediate Codec. The resulting files are huge and FCE has slowed to a crawl on my macbook.

What are the 2nd and 3rd best options for converting AVI's?
Balance between quality, file size and workability on FCE.

Final output will be vimeo & youtube in HD.

Thanks

try dvcpro hd. I'm not sure if it's supported since i only use fcp, but it's generally the best compromise codec for what you want.

Thanks
I think the problem was the 24fps. I'm now converting to Apple Inter. Codec 720p at 25fps, 48khz. Then setting the sequence the same. FCE seems to like it a lot better.

the best conversions speed up the footage, i'm not sure if streamclip does that. i don't like the look of adding frames.

I always convert my avi files over to Apple ProRes 422; Edit on a 1280x720 Apple ProRes 422 timeline in FCP; Use Quicktime conversion on export to make sure I am really exporting 1280x720; Send that to Compressor for compressing for the web. Below is a video I recently shot and edited for a custom car show. Bear with me, I am still trying to discover the best compression settings for the best quality. I don't know if its just youtube or what but this video below plays and looks 10 times better playing on my 106" home theater screen via my Apple TV. Entire video was shot with the D90.

One thing I need to figure out and again it might be a youtube thing or could be something in my compression settings is that it makes my footage almost have a stuttery look instead smooth playback its kinda jerky on shots with any kind of movement. Anyone have any suggestions or ideas of what might be causing that? You may or may not notice this in the video I attached.

don't use quicktime conversion but quicktime movie, otherwise you lose a generation for no reason. the best quality can be had sending directly to compressor, but it's slooow. to the op: we're talking fc pro now, you should keep doing what you're doing.
