Strange tape travel mechanism noise and accesses.

Ok, you know the noise that the recorder components makes whenever you insert a tape or when the camera goes into standby mode? Well.. I've noticed this with my camera... Often(but not always) after a REC segment, the gears(or whatever that's inside) would make noise for like 5 or 6 seconds during of which, the green "PAUSE" indicator dissapears and a red tape icon would flash at the top corner of the screen for a split second. The TC would also reset temoporarily back to 00:00:00:00. Usually 5 or 6 secs later, the noise stops, the PAUSE indicator comes back and my TC is restored to what it should be. Does anyone else experience this? THanks

Re: Strange tape travel mechanism noise and access

I just started experiencing the same problem a few days ago. I'm in REC pause mode, the green PAUSE disappears, red flashing tape icon pops up. TC breaks, but then restores to a few sec. short of where it should be. FYI :My cam has about 92 hours head use and I just switched to Sony premium tape.

Re: Strange tape travel mechanism noise and access

if your cam is in the rec pause mode.. it means the heads are still spinning under the tape when it is stopped .. the cam will only run like this for a couple min. i cant remember excactly how long right now, but basically in order to stop the heads or tape from wearing by the constant head spinning the cam will shut the heads down and go into rec stndby after a while.. ive never been up close and personal with the cam to listen or watch what it does when doing this, so i dont know if this is what your expeiriencing, but my indicator then switches to "stndby" once this is completed, and does not return back to the pause mode with head spinning.. so who knows?

No I mean, the camera is ont actually going into STBY mode. It will all of the sudden start making noise and get out of PAUSE mode and then a few seconds later come back into PAUSE mode. By REC STBY mode you mean when it actually displays STANDBY on the LCD correct?

Re: Strange tape travel mechanism noise and access

yeah..i was talking about when mine goes into stndby after a while... weird ,you didnt feed it nachos before it went to be did you.. cause that will always make somthing a little trippy.

anyway sorry but.. i got no idea in that case ..

Re: Strange tape travel mechanism noise and access

Well, my cam did it AGAIN today.
This has nothing to do with the tape protection feature where the cam powers off or goes into STANDBY mode after 5 min.. The LCD display actually looks like the tape ejected for a few seconds.

Boogerg, does this happen when you shoot handheld or on sticks? or both? And does your cam beep to warn you? According to the manual, it should if theres a problem in the tape transport. But mine doesn't...and I have beep turned ON.
Is anyone else experiencing this problem?

Re: Strange tape travel mechanism noise and access

I really odn't know but it seems to be happening when I shoot handheld. But then maybe it might because when I shoot handheld, the camera is always close to me so I know when it does it. Have you narrowed it down to when it does it?? It "seems" that on mine it does it right after a REC segment. Could be wrong though....

I just realized that the handstrap is anchored to the tape door/cassette holder. Since this happens only when I shoot handheld, I think it might be the door getting loose or something. The strap is actually pulling on the door on both ends if you look at it. It seems like there's a little play when the door is shut too...about 1 mm. Is this how yours is?

Re: Strange tape travel mechanism noise and access

perhaps this has somthing to do with the "unique pre-cleaning and auto cleaning heads" on the dvx mentioned here in the features list.

http://www.panasonic.com/PBDS/subcat/Products/cams_ccorders/f_ag-dvx100.html

....perhaps its doing a pre-cleaning, or a self clean thing after being run for a little.. who knows.. has anyone contacted panasonic on this?

Re: Strange tape travel mechanism noise and access

I'm gonna send in the camera for service for this problem and a backfocus. However, it'll have to come after my current production wraps up.

I've started rewinding every new tape that I load in the cam before I record anything...Everythings worked fine for the last three days or so...I don't want to jinx it by saying I've resolved this problem but...

try it for a few days and see how it goes.

Re: Strange tape travel mechanism noise and access

Same here,
I get the red tape indicator light

I t does not happan all the time so, it is difficult for me to figure out why it happans.
I have determined that the tape is trying to eject but the main door is closed so can't push out. Then it recycles and returns to a normal state.
I have noticed this issue while on tripod as well as when I'm in handheld mode. It sounds like pannasonic needs to look into this.

Re: Strange tape travel mechanism noise and access

Update: Forget it, rewinding tape doesn't really help, Reset button doesn't help, Cleaning tape doesn't help. Now I'm getting a GYRO NG warning every so often.
I've emailed Panasonic twice and no response.
I'm considering a Sony pd150. No progressive mode but it's solid.
DVX seems a little delicate. Someone prove me wrong.
