Strange sound coming out of a brand new HVX200

Yes, it's not the HVX200A.

I just got a new camera from BHPhoto yesterday. I am 99.8% sure it was never opened before.

It has a very slight but audible sound coming from the front of the camera. It sounds like a slight quiet buzz/rumble. The sound seems to occur more when the lens is zoomed. (zoomed with or without the servo). If I didn't know better, I would say the sound was almost like a hard drive being written to.

The sound happens with or without P2 cards inserted.

Any thoughts? Should I be hearing this? I would think the sound would be audible by the built in mics.

Thanks for any input.

The sound occurs when auto-focus takes place. When the camera is sitting on a table and not moving, the sound does not occur. When I move the camera to change the focus, the sound occurs as the camera changes focus.

Should I hear a rumbling sound here?

thanks for any input.

It's literally brand new, clean, not a spec of visible dust on it.

The sound is not a 'crunching' sound, as much as an audible motor sound when the camera auto-refocuses.

BH Photo, their shop is closed now till Apr 28. How's that for customer service.

Mine does this too on occasion - I thought it was normal. Once in a while, it even
makes the sound when not in auto focus mode. But it has never affected the operation of the camera.

Honestly I though this was going to be another what's that sound coming from lense area threads??? It keeps clicking (The clunk is normal).... thankfully it's not one of those. But this is actually the first I heard of this. I can't really think of anything other than what was mentioned already. Hope you get it taken care of.

I recently sent my HVX in to Panasonic to have a look at this sound. $960 later they replaced the lens and it makes the same sound - maybe even a little louder now. I talked with a tech and come to find out the sound is normal. Some cameras are louder than others but regardless it has to do with the internal focus adjustment electronics.... Panny has agreed to refund the cost of the lens but I'm out for the labor, etc..

Since it's new you might want to try and trade it in on a 200a OR just not worry about it. Either way, Good Luck!

B&H is a brick-and-mortar shop that happens to have a website. They're not trying to be Amazon. If you call them during normal operating hours, their service is great. They don't have 365-days-a-year service, but if you call them and ask them to explain the difference between a pro mist and a fog filter, you'll get a correct answer, because they have people that know what they're doing.

I just had a problem with film last week, they overnighted me more and covered the shipping so I'd have it in time.

Just a note on B&H. They are closed for Passover. If you get to Manhattan, a trip to their store is better than anything else you can do in the big Apple.

In this day of 24/7 everything, I respect and admire B&H (and Adorama) and other firms that put more than the almighty dollar in their business plan.

I've had nothing but great success with both firms by the way after having purchased tens of thousands of dollars over many transactions. I'd say call and see what they can do.

On another note, I just decided to check my HVX out while I was writing this and sure enough, mine makes the same sound. I've just never used the auto focus before!
