strange problems

Hey everyone, I haven't cleaned the heads of my camera and it has around 130 hours on it. It is dropping frames and causing strange audio bleeps that are almost like the sound of rewinding the tape at high speeds while the audio still plays. I'm not sure if this would be caused by the heads of the camera? It is dropping quite a bit of frames which makes me think it's something more serious. Does anyone have any idea as to how many frames can be dropped due to dirty recording heads?

I am hoping all it takes is a cleaning, and I plan on sending it into a service center, but if anyone has any other ideas as to the problem it would be greatly appreciated.

More info would be helpful. Is it dropping frames and giving you audio problems as you capture it into your NLE?
Does the tape play back in your camera OK? Dropped frames generally refers to a capture problems. Camera problems generally report digital glitches or "broken" frames.
If you can be a bit more specific, you'll increase your chances for a fix.

the audio cuts out on the tape during camera playback, but the footage doesn't skip around like on the capture and it doesn't make the weird noise as often. What would that mean do you think?
 
Are you capturing from the camera to your computer, or from another cam? Audio probs as you describe, could be from dirty heads or a slightly misaligned tape transport. Similarly the "skipping" frames could be from glitches in the control track from a misaligned transport assembly. Try a cleaning first. If that doesn't work, it likely needs to be sent in for service. Go with a factory authorized facility, as they have the computer setup for software alignment.

Could be a bad or cheap tape, or a tape exposed to extreme heat like being left in a car on a hot day. Try buying a fresh, name-brand, tape and see if you have the same problem.

If you have a small MiniDV camcorder, try chaining it to the DVX and using it as a record deck. See if you have the problem that way. But try a fresh tape first.
