Strange - No Playback... Semi-Urgent*

Hey guys, I've had my DVX for almost a year now and have been using it quite a bit, I feel like I know it very well, but I've got a problem that's baffling me. I'm in the middle of a shoot this month and while I can borrow a friends 100A, I'd prefer not to (not the kind of guy I want to owe a favor, if you get me...) - Anyway

I was on an early shoot this morning, shot everything, came back, took a break, then brought out the camera to look at the footage over lunch and it won't show the video. The time code plays properly thought, so it's more baffling to me. I thought maybe it was this mornings tape, but it does it with other tapes too that have already been captured.

It doesn't show in the viewfinder or on the LCD. I reset the camera, that did nothing, and tried just about everything else I could think of. Any thoughts?! Could it be the head? The one thing I didn't try was cleaning it (I'll do so now), but I wouldn't think there would be such an immediate drastic change if it was dirty.

Thanks-

Okay, Update...

I cleaned the head, looks like that worked for all the tapes except the one this morning.

Seems as though I mixed up this tape with one from a shoot about four months ago and recorded over it. No worries for the old stuff, it was just some tests, but the footage this morning is 'blocked,' if you will, with the footage from then (ie: big line of old footage, big line of todays footage, repeat, etc, etc).

I haven't run into this problem before, anything I can do about it and not have to re-shoot that anyone know's of? I can reshoot this mornings stuff, the location is avaliable whenever we need it, but it was a complicated shoot (involved a boat, a dam, etc).

Any thoughts on either post would be appreciated, thanks again.

EDIT: Argh... could it be that the old footage was 60i and the new was 24pA?

If you own a camera that exspensive, go out and buy a $400, mini Dv and save your headers. I wouldn't do anything other then film with the AG!

Re: Strange - No Playback... Semi-Urgent*

its just dropout.. most likely caused by dirty heads or tape degredation..possibly a loose firewire connection. are you switching between wet and dry tapes?

somtimes you can just rewind and try to recapture and it will be fine. but swithcing frame rates(recording methods) has no affect on the tape, or its playback.

Re: Strange - No Playback... Semi-Urgent*

Do all your play,ff, and rw. That will save the life of your camera. Also, don't switch between to many brands of tapes. It will screw up your headers.

Re: Strange - No Playback... Semi-Urgent*

I haven't switched tapes since I got the camera, used dry tapes only, panasonic -- what I was saying about recording over the 60i with the 24pA seems like that might have something to do with it? As soon as the footage from this morning finishes, the old footage plays fine. Sort of frustrating. Anyway, thanks for the responces.

Re: Strange - No Playback... Semi-Urgent*

THATS JUST DROPOUT SIMPLY CAUSED BY REUSING A TAPE..sorry . caps lock was on.  but anyway . thats caused by poor recording quality from recording over/reusing a tape.. its a big no-no, and should never be done when shooting anything critical.   tape stores magnetic images which contain the digital data. once its been used once, your trying to remagnatize the tape with a different image over the one that is already there. .. most of the times it works.. but when it doesnt.. well now you know :-/   sorry bro. looks like you need to reshoot unless it decides to start working for some reason.
