Strange Focus?

Hi all! The other day I was shooting some test. I was trying to shoot a fullmoon in 25P. To my surprise I found that the moon was focussed in 95 instead of 99. If I moved the ring focus to 99 the moon turned into a blurred one, even in 96... It is strange, isn't it?
I also have found that in automatic focus the number is never higher than 95. Do you know why?

Thank you

Zab

Re: Strange Focus?

The DVX is calibrated such that infinity hits at about 93. Any further than that on the dial is actually focusing "past infinity" (which does, by the way, still focus, as I found when constructing the "world's first (and worst) homemade mini35 adapter for the DVX100"...

So, there's nothing wrong with your camera, infinity should pop sharply in focus at around 93 or so. Why does the lens go further than that? I don't really know, maybe it's so the autofocus system can overshoot and then compensate?

Re: Strange Focus?

Ok, thank you! It's good to know that my camera works properly ;-)

Re: Strange Focus?

Thanks Barry!

I remember you explaining this awhile back and I was trying to find that damn thread!

Re: Strange Focus?

Question is : why ? What's the use of these 6 extra numbers ?
In case we find something to film beyond the infinity ?
To please Buzz in Toy Story ?
Engineers (especially the japanese ones) are such strange people... Make us wonder on things we thought "unwonderable".

Re: Strange Focus?

i think that this phenomenon is not special to the DVX's lens. i saw it on some other lenses.

Re: Strange Focus?

The extra few numbers allow for some leeway when using focus changing lenses in front of the stock lens.

Re: Strange Focus?

Phew ! So japanese engineers are not that weird after all — they're human beings, not aliens. Thanks a lot Jarred. I feel relieved. ;)
