Strange Focus!

Hi all,

Just been looking at a few shots where I bring something into focus and they appear to be a bit strange. Part of the image looks split apart and then joins together. CHeck the clip below to see what I'm talking about. Shot with a Super Takumar 55mm F2. Used the same lens on my 550D without this strange look when things enter focus.

Can anyone explain what causes this?

What mount is the lens and what adaptor are you using?

Lens was M42 mount (I think it was actually a 135mm @ F4) and I'm using some no-brand adapter from Ebay.

Just checked a few focuses from today. Same lens, same mount and this didn't occur. Very strange. It occurred on a lot of my shots that night. ISO was at 1250.

The black vertical space in the foreground looks like it was caused by an obstruction. Did you have an object like that in the foreground of all your shots at the time?

It definitely looks to me like there is an object in the foreground that you were shooting around -- look at the streetlights in the background -- the out of focus image is flattened/cut off on the inside by what looks like a pole or something close to the camera. The one distant light that appears most split is right in the middle of this obstruction, so all you see until it pops into focus is the two different images coming around opposite sides of the blocking object,

Look on the left or right side of the image as it racks into focus and everything seems normal.

Since I don't really see what this object is, I wonder if it's some structure internal to the lens or adapter, or even something like a hair or fleck of paper that got in there while changing the lens?
