Strange Blocky lookin pixels ?

I noticed this strange phenomenon while doing a shoot. At this studio there is some bright red chairs and carpet. For some reason, if you look at the red parts, mostly on the left, you will see that it looks as if the pixels are extra large and distorted like an old nintendo game or something and its pissing me off. Anyone else have this problem?

Re: Strange Blocky lookin pixels ?

Weird...what is your chroma level setting on the camera? Reds are notorious for looking ugly in DV and if your chroma level is really high, it can break it up completely. It also looks like your white balance is way off....

Re: Strange Blocky lookin pixels ?

I knew the white balance was totally off. I'm not sure about the chroma thing. I really dont know anything about it. whatever the default for F6 24p adv has set is what you see there.

Re: Strange Blocky lookin pixels ?

It's the ol' 4:1:1 color space again. I answer multiple questions on this every day (I used to ask them every day though so it's okay.)

Color info is saved in 1/4 the resolution of grayscale info in DV footage (I think it's 180X480) while grayscale is 720X480. So when an area has a big difference in color (particularly reds against anything else) but not a big difference in luminosity...well...you get the chunks.

Re: Strange Blocky lookin pixels ?

This can be fixed pretty easily, btw, in post if you want to output to a dvd (where color is in 360X240 resolution). The colors will have fuzzy edges, but not blocky at all and much more pleasing.

Re: Strange Blocky lookin pixels ?

It is a funny picture though. A dude and his biatches. The one lone white chick on the side. LMAO :D Whats he drinking anyway? A Grasshopper?

Re: Strange Blocky lookin pixels ?

thats a rapper from Do Or Die, and he's drinking hypnotic. yeah its a shitty shot, thats why we used different camera for this later that day.

Re: Strange Blocky lookin pixels ?

Hpnotiq is probably the coolest drink ever. I've never tried it because it's so expensive though....maybe now I will. The main problem with the shot is just the white balance, really.

Well, he did say the white balance was off a bit.

;)

It's what happens to you after approximately 5 minutes of being logged onto DVXuser.com

Re: Strange Blocky lookin pixels ?

Hudson,

I think hypnotiq is that blue looking premade in a bottle drink that the guy has with his biatches and bling bling :D

Re: Strange Blocky lookin pixels ?

man oh man. the grab... is it for real or parody again. i just can't tell anymore...
and artists wonder why their music is stereo-typed!
help me obi-wan, you're my only hope... ???

seriously, though, as mentioned above and a billion times before - it's the evil reds!!! run away!!!
here's a good rule of thumb that i find easy to remember when confronted with such a shot as this: darth vader's light saber is red, and that equals bad. ;D

I dont really drink it. but them rapper groupies love it

I looked at the other thread and I saw a post about turning down the chroma phase to -7, and something about having chroma blur. I'm gonna try this when I get home tonight.
