Hey guys,

Recenty Premiere has been running REALLY slowly. I can't capture a damn thing. Drops frames all over the place.

I'm assuming this isn't a Premiere related problem. The weird thing is that I captured and edited a huge project only a week or so ago. Now I can't seem to do anything. I used Ad-Aware to check for spyware but didn't come up with anything substantial. Any suggestions?

The thing is I just reinstalled it :( so I know that won't help. Thanks for the suggestion though. Maybe I'll try reinstalling it again.

I'm capturing to a secondary drive so maybe I should look and make sure everything is ok with it as well.

I second what Shooter, recommends, kill off both the preview and conformed audio files and then degrag all the drives associated with Premier. I do multiple defrags after every big project. Even a 3rd pass will further improve file fragmentation. This is especially true if you use an external drive that shares a 1394 interface with your capture port.

Thanks guys.

For the record: I just reinstalled and no luck. I also tried capturing with another program and that didn't work either.... makes me wonder if I'm having some sort of freaky firewire problems. Maybe my card is dying on me? I had problems with an external firewire drive recently... (not related to my editing). Damn. Interesting that you mention defragging being very necessary if you have an external Firewire drive that shares a 1394 interface... hmm. Do you mean in general or for editing?

By dumping the temp files, you mean dump my systems temporary files? I have a program called CCleaner that I use to clean up every once in a while. Usually takes care of registry issues and such. I'll give that a shot and then follow it up with deleting the temp and preview files as recommended.

Off to try these things out!

Interesting. Doesn't it normally set up to use OGL when installed? You know where I can find a control panel for this?

I'll look around premiere for it. (if anyone tries chiming in and telling me to RTFM, I can't because a professor jacked mine temporarily to make copies) lol

Ahh.. Why was I thinking open gl? It's direct 3d.

Okay, well this may or may not do the trick, but double check just to make sure:

Open up a project, go to Project> Project settings> General> Playback Settings and make sure that it's set to "use direct3d" rather than GDI

Still no luck :(

Defragmented (which definitely needed to be done) both the main and secondary hard disks. Still having the same troubles. Premiere runs fine until I tell it to capture video. It then sits FOREVER before finally bringing up the capture window which, when it works, captures a frame or two then fails. I'm going to try installing some various other software to see if the problem is universal (I already tried this with the included cheap windows crap and it didn't work either).

Next in line is to replace the Firewire board I guess.

Have you try to capture from your camera to Windows Movie Maker. If you can´t you have a problem with the firewire or Windows

Yeah, I tried WMM with no luck and just now tried Scenalyzer. Nothing. WMM crashes on me and Scenalyzer gives me errors.

I'm thinking about trying to use the USB port for capture but I've never done that before so I can't say much about the response I get.

ARGH!

I think Windows is really screwed up. It may have been the latest "update" that was automatically downloaded by Windows. Damn you Bill Gates! Maybe I'll try removing the update and see if that helps (if I can determine what it was).

Yeah that may very well be :(

That's my next step. I'll have to wait until tomarrow to get another one so I guess things are on hold until then.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys. It's much appreciated.

I have Premiere Pro 1,5 and have no problem to capture. I use a panasonic NV-GS50 as a tapedeck. Good luck tomorrow
And i wait for my Dell 24" screen, it will arrive in a few hour's

Shaw,
- have you tried to capture with your camera to another computer?
- have you tried to capture from another camera to your computer?
- have you tried another FireWire cable?

/Roger
