Straight to the big screen

If I have a commercial or short trailer I wanted to play on a screen at a movie theater that was NOT shot using an anamorphic lens how would the quality look blown up to that size?

dpends on the transfer , but it can look realy nice. espesciall yfrom the middle to back of the theatre. like november .

It depends a lot on what the shot is too. If it contains a lot of fine detail, DV looks terrible on the big screen, eg, naked trees blowing in the wind.

The larger the detail, the better it stands up in general. A CU shot doesn't look too bad if you are a little way back in the cinema.

well the reason I asked the original question is the last time i was at the movies, before they started showing the trailers, they were showing still slides advertsing local business. At the end, there was a screen that said to advertise on this screen call....and the number. I got to thinking that I could promote some work but I need to find out the format and if indeed it needs to be converted or transferred.

Back in May, I had an opportunity to play a trailer I shot and edited on a big movie screen. They had a DVD player hooked up to a Projector system and I just had to adjust the lens of the projector to get my trailer to fit the screen in a way that it wasnt hanging off at the top and bottom. It didnt look to bad but it wasnt pitch black in the theater when I did the test either. I am guessing with it dark it would have looked a little better.

DVX100Shooter,
A client of mine decided to show his 30 second spot in the AMC chain here in the LA area, and I had to provide a BetacamSP master to the company who puts it up on the screen.
They convert the master to MPEG 2 and project it like a sattelite broadcast to the theaters.
Sounds like a formula for disaster, quality wise, but a co-worker who saw it said that it looked surprisingly good. I advised the client against it, not for quality issues, but because many people (myself included) HATE commercials when paying for a movie;I was concerned about viewer backlash..."hate commercials when I'm payin' for a movie and won't patronize those businesses that run 'em" kind of thing.
Forget the name of the company but you could search the web.
Hope this helps.
