straight edge

Re: straight edge

LOL

Plagued with Alcoholism?  Sounds like one of my Undead Tales.  Imagine hordes of drunks staggering home from the bar.

LOL

I know it's bad. I know I need to quit. But people can't be so quick to judge when they're so out of shape their artieries are about to explode or can't get up a flight of stairs without getting winded.

Quitting will be tough for me. I'm a junkie. :-/

Re: straight edge

hope my contribution to the thread didn't offend. the range and variety of responses--from casual/jocular to serious--makes it hard to gauge what needs to be said.

i will say several of my mother's sisters (age 60-70) are lifelong smokers who simply cannot summon the will to face each day without relying on smoking to get them by--even as their health substantially deteriorates. this past summer, on vacation, one of them went into cardiac arrest and died on the table. tragic. my mom quit 20 years ago, and is helpless to convince her remaining sisters that it's never too late to stop. but now they're facing their mortality, and their habitual response is to smoke. crazy.

Re: straight edge

It is crazy. Addictions are a complex and difficult thing. But we are all friendly here, and I feel free to share things like this when appropriate. It's one of the things I like about this site. There is as much trust here as can be found in a cyber community.

Re: straight edge

It can be hard to stop. I can to a degree sympathize with your sisters. I know I would undoubtably become hooked if I were to drink or smoke. I just know enough about myself to prevent that fortunately. Some people just get hooked while others could do the hardest drug they could find and not be affected to any degree in the long run. Crazy.

The fact that her sisters are facing their mortality is probably a very frightening aspect for them. Smoking probably helps them calm or hide from that fear (while ironically doing more damage at the same time).

Re: straight edge

never smoked(only turkey and ham)...used to drink in college...responsibly though unless broken up w/ girlfriend. ;D...now it's just wine, dine, dvx time... :P

Re: straight edge

Smoking is that one thing I am addicted hard on. I've tried most (young and dumb) of what I guess you can call 'experimentation'. I am not ashamed; nor was I ever addicted or had a problem with it. I was the first of my 'friends' (That crowd anyway) to stop that non-sense as it just wasn't for me.

Now at 34? I love my beer (on occasion) but the smoking has stayed with me. Damn you Apes!

On a liner note; all but (2) of my 'friends from that crowd' stopped a long time ago. The other (2) ? Man, never grew up, never stopped. Terrible thing.

Re: straight edge

thartley- I think what chi was trying to say (and I agree with) is that there are TONS of straight edge kids that are sXe for all the wrong reasons. The most obvious reason is that they are blindly following an ideology or (basically) fashion statement. In the punk rock/ hardcore/ whatever scene there are people who wear Xs on they're hands like some wear spikes in they're blue hair.

For many, it's all about belonging to a scene. And while I do agree that there are far worse scenes/ groups to be a part of, it shouldn't be dismissed so lightly. Because once you've sheltered yourself for so long, the second you get exposed, you've got no idea how to react. And that's why do many great sXe hardcore bands from the 80's/ 90's have such huge drug problems now.

I'm with chi %100 on this: If your not going to smoke or drink, that's great. If you want to be a vegan for legitimate reasons, that's great too. But there's no need to label yourself straight edge, if that's not the reason that your doing it.

Poison free is an ideal, a way of life. Not a piercing you can take out when you get sick of it, or some X's that you drew on your hand that you can wash off.

Addicted, yes!

I smoke. I've quit a few times. It's hard, but not impossible. The part I find impossible is STAYING quit. I party a fair bit on the weekends and I have a few beers and I just don't care and fire her up again. I would have to stop parting for 6 months to quite smoking... That aint gonna happen!

Re: straight edge

well, my friend, your first objective is to realize that you're a marsupial. Then you need some new specs...and sheesus....dye your hair...then you'd pick up a chicky baby, get married cuz you're hot,
and you'll be 'partying' with the missus e'ry night....If you catch my meanin'...

Texas, get away from me!

Re: straight edge

Man...I remember being at a baby's dedication service, and the pastor polled the room...

"Raise your hand if you want your child to grow up to be just like you."

What a moment. Not a hand raised in the building. It was bittersweet. Not a SINGLE person. And I don't think that hands stayed down out of modesty and humility...I guess we're all in agreement that there's always a better way...
