straight edge

Re: straight edge

I agree, to each his own. I enjoy a little smoking and drinking sometimes. But I try to go with out sometimes too, just to prove to myself its no problem. One of the things that pisses me off though, is some of these employers that are recently saying that if they catch an employee smoking, OFF work grounds, OFF work time, they will STILL fire them. I thought this was America... Whats next? They catch you at a MacDonalds with a Big MAC in your hands, your automatically terminated? This country is getting way out of hand. One thing I do know for sure. After I'm dead, I won't be able to enjoy an after dinner smoke, a few beers with my friends, or the occasional burger, so as long as I'm alive, I'm going to enjoy it now, even if it might take a couple years off me...

Re: straight edge

I heard about that "Smoking and your fired" issue. Unbelieavable and I agree; take that **** to the Supreme Court.

Re: straight edge

straight edge is ok for some 16 year old kids, keeping them out of troubles etc. However, it creates problems for many of these kids too, by making them extremely narrow minded, making them very trendy and not an individual etc.
I guess I have seen too many of these kids following the extreme routes, and they learn that by being a straight edge. Just look at all those extreme militant sXe kids from the late 80's and the early 90's and see where they are now. Half of them are drunks and druggies now. Just look at Skip from Turning Point, the vocal from the biggest sXe hardcore bands form late 80's, he died of OD a few years ago. I meet up with my old friends from "dogpile posi-point" days, and all we talk about is how stupid we were back in days and we laugh about it....
I also think there is a problem for someone in the late 20's or early 30's still calling themselves sXe. I think that is an act of insecurity. Don't label yourself, are you that insecure?
don't drink if you don't want to, don't smoke if you don't want to,  be a vegan etc. because you want to be healthy, that is cool and good for you, but if you do those things to just label yourself a sXe, then you have a problem. BIG insecurity problem!  ;)

Maybe I'm having a bad day this morning, or maybe I am not reading this post in the spirit it was intended, but I couldnt disagree more with this statement.  If kids are straightedge (sXe) by choice because they know what walking on the other side has to offer and they choose not to, that is great.  If they are straightedged because they are too scared to TRY the other side, so they become narrow-minded in some arenas of their lives, good for them.  And if it carries thru to their adulthood, then that is who they are.  When you've lost a father and an uncle to alcohol induced liver disease, sat bedside for three days while a brother hallucinates, shakes and rattles his teeth thru DT's, and you get a call that your best friend (and incidentally, ex-husband due to drug use) has just had his head blown off in an argument with someone on drugs...you will hope and pray that your own kids will grow up to be the most self-labelled sXe, narrow minded dolt walking upright, healthy and smiling.  Every single one of those people looked me straight in the eyes and told me they were just messing around and having fun.  "I wont be like this forever, but I'm young and want to have fun before I get old."

But like I said, I have not had my coffee yet, so maybe I misunderstood what you were saying.

SO......coffee's done now.  I'll come back later and apologize for my outburst. :)

Re: straight edge

I like some wine with dinner every now and then.. a couple wine coolers at a social party.. definitely no smoking for me though.

and John, ...whats this about the IRONMAN? are you training for it. my wife's massage therapy co. works with the event every year. I was thinking about getting some footage last year when we were there.

Re: straight edge

thartley, I can relate to what you are saying. Alcoholism has run rampant in my family for generations, with many, many casualties. My 2 brothers and I have an unspoken pact to keep tabs on each other. We all drink a bit socially now (I the least) with no adverse affects. It is an extremely painful thing to go through, or watch someone go through. I've never tried any drugs of any kind (other than alcohol and caffeine) and it was fear that most often kept me away in my youth. Since then it's just common sense. But fear did the job before I had any sense (common or otherwise)

That being said, I think that anytime someone follows a way of life without understanding it, only being attracted to the trappings, it can be a very dangerous thing. If not in and of itself, then in a matter of showing a pattern of behavior. I understand that we all have a need to belong. But it's always the question of "why" to me. Why that group, why that band, why that whatever. Kids understand their motivations far more than we give them credit for. They know why they do things, and they often know that they do things for unhealthy reasons. They just need to be challenged on it. High school is tough in many ways, and I will admit that there are worse groups to get caught up in than sXe, but in the end I want my kids to think for themselves, and not be "joiners".

That town is deadly. They basically give the booze away... plus you can't swing a dead racoon without hitting a ****ing bar. Great town!

I 'had my fun'when I was in High School; I am a father now. I hope (pray) my son never get involved with the **** I did.

Re: straight edge

Maker's Mark manhattan, straight up. glass filled to rim, bits of floating ice tapping my upper lip on the first, careful sip. hits the stomach and sends heat back up the throat, and i shiver a little. delicious. in a bit, i'll pull out the bali shag and roll me a bit of tobacco in a tight, white paper cone, grab my jacket and stand outside the entrance of the bar, ask for a light just to make conversation. take a nice slow drag, drawing air into lungs, hold a moment, then exhale. tap the cone a bit.

i'm not a smoker, and i don't drink regularly. when i do it i do it for pleasure, and never for need.

Re: straight edge

I'm straighter than a straight thing that's straight. By choice. For a number of reasons.

LOL
"Don't bother Daddy while he's killing himself...we'll launch some model rockets in a minute."
LOL
it was just funny the way you put it.

touchy topic...my family seems unscathed by alcoholism, so even in the midst of all the Christian semi-conservatism, there's often a bottle of wine in the house, and my brother's an ACF Chef and he cooks with it all the time "(taught me how to make a bangin' white wine masala sauce)...but the town we moved to is plagued with alcoholism, so MY brothers and I have an unspoken pact not to drink in public, nor around our 6 younger siblings, which pretty much means that we don't drink at all....

But we have our fair share of other issues.....

Nothing wrong with that.
