Storing Footage

My iMac, which is my primary workstation, has about 59 gigs free on the 250 gb HD. I've got a 1tb Maxtor drive that I connect via firewire and have only ever used to back up the files on my Mac, so I guess there's about 800 gigs free.

I'm just shooting to tape (HVX200A) right now, but saving for P2. (Actually, I'm just getting to know the camera right now, so I haven't actually started any projects.) The question is, when I do find myself with 20, 30, 500 gigs of footage, is it going to be cool (and easy) to put that on the external drive and access it in FCP (which I'm also just getting to know) when I get to work? Thanks!

Storing the footage on an external drive is actually better and faster than putting it onto your main drive. When it's on your main drive, you are essentially asking your hard drive to be in 2 places at once - one place is running the application and the other place is accessing the capture files. My main drive only hosts my applications and working fcp files. All my capture scratch and render files are stored on externals. Just make sure that you are not running a usb external and at least using firewire 400 or 800. Also, when you start shooting p2, make sure that you have a redundant drive to store all of the digital files in case your main hard drive fails.
