Storing footage

I just picked up the HMC and so far no problems what so ever. I'm going on a trip and will be bringing it, only thing is I know my laptop won't be able to capture the footage in fcp (very old laptop) is there anyway I can just drop all the raw files into an external hard drive right from the cards ?
 
Sure, you can just copy each card with it's entire contents intact into separate folders then when you return from your trip just import the footage into your NLE.
 
You should be able to connect the HMC to your laptop through USB/Firewire and copy the files over. I don't believe you need to go through FCP or any NLE. The camera should just appear as an external drive. Also, you could use an SD card reader to connect with the laptop if you can't get your camera to.
