i plan on ordering an hvx w/ 1 4gb card this week. if i'm understanding this correctly, i could be out in a car shooting footage, plug a portable harddrive such as this one http://www.lacie.com/products/product.htm?pid=10722 into a power adapter for the cigarette lighter and dump my footage over the usb or firewire w/ out the need for a laptop. i understand i could not stream the footage directly to the harddrive, i just need to know i could put it on there w/ out a computer.

also, does anyone know if it might be possible to hack a video ipod(usb) for the purpose of dumping footage? thanks for the help.

It will work but is not very practical. We only had one card on a green screen shoot last week and it was not a workable solution. I ended up switching over to tape to keep shooting while the card was dumped. I tried transferring the card from the firewire port to a drive at the end of the first card and the client looked at me like I was crazy because of how long it took to transfer this way.

In my opinion 1 card is good for novelty or for the occasional HD shot in an otherwise tape workflow. 2 cards is better but 3 is the only way I can see it truely being seemless.

Two is the minimum. If you offload to a laptop you can keep ahead of the workflow (unless you're rolling long continuous takes). I'd strongly recommend two 4gb's over 1 8gb any day. And a laptop is an extraordinarily superior offloading method than direct-to-hard-disk.

Panasonic should sell a BLING BLING package

HVX200
(2) 4GB cards
Choice of Powerbook OR PC, both w/ PCMIA card slot
(1) Crappy little 60GB p2 Store
(1) Marshall Monitor

all for the low cost of 18K
