Storage alternatives

From what I understand, in order to record to a portable hard drive (or its equivalent), you first need to record to a P2 card, and then, from there you can dump the footage to the drive.

I am also under the impression (from what I have read), that if you record footage directly to a laptop, you will not need to use a P2 card.

My question is this:

Would it be possible to bypass a P2 card if I were to record footage to an external hard drive that was connected to a laptop? In other words, would it be possible to use, say, a 200 gigabyte portable hard drive connected to a laptop and skip p2 cards all together?

I have the same question and it seems resonable to suppose you can.
If nothing else then the files can be recorded to your laptop and dumped to the other external HD while you go about recording more.
Depending on the laptop.
But I don't know if you can Log & Capture to an external drive...

I plan on clearing space on my old Apple 17" (I put in a 7200 drive) and recording to that and then moving files to the external drive as it fills.

It would be great if this works without a P2 card, though I'll probably get P2 cards eventually as well so I can be more mobile

My understanding is that you will need either Avid on the PC or FCP on the Mac to do this, as it's the NLE software that controls the capture from the camera.

As suggested, it doesn't matter at that point how the harddrives are attached (interal or firewire) for this to work as long as the data rate is sustained.

Thanks Jim,
My understanding too.
So if the HD are at least 7200, you should be good.
I wonder if the older 1.33 Gz processor on my Apple 17" is gonna clog the (data rate) pipeline...
?
Ekk...I'm so close to this new HDV workflow I crave...
but there are miles to go before I sleep...
(at least a few weeks....probably more like a few months...)

I take it thats a slip of the tongue and creative licence in your poem right? Cause as discussed ad nauseum - the HVX200 isn't an HDV camera....

Also use the search function or just flick down some posts - as storage discussions have also been discussed at length - both archiving, and oncamera recording....

Cheers, Nathan.

The laptop/external drive is my plan as well. On one of these forums once I saw a link to a wearable desk of sorts - a harness gave you a work surface in front of you. | This allowed you to walk around with your laptop open. Anyone recall the product name or link?

Thanks

Yes Nathan Poetic Licence, DVCProHD-to-go
I have read every thread on this and other forums at least three times by now, and I am quite excited by the workflow.
Since it's obvious from Haku's video's of it, that a PB 17 can take a P2 card
or be streamed to

The one question that plagues me (and maybe nobody can answer until the camera appears) is whether my PBG4 1.33 (with upgraded 7200 HD) will take it...Meaning the PB is 2 years old though the HD is new...Data Bottle neck...

So, as you know if you are on these forums, many of us are on pins and needles waiting to see what this camera can do...
Thanks for the reply though,

As for the Laptop Harnass Mccutch is asking about, I remember seeing it and thinking it might be better to Log and Capture in Final Cut, put something in the machine to keep it from closing or pressing keys and throw it in a backpack
but that's dodgy...

that's my understanding. i have always heard you can go straight from hvx to external hard drive connected to any old lap top. a robust fw drive is the key element, and of course i'm talking about recording hdv or dv50.

Well, .... ... WHY are you talking about HDV? - Your quote is about P2 and I never heard that P2 records HDV with ANY camera - so why do you say "of course I 'm talking about hdv" ? There is NO hdv with P2.
